a few days back the windows 8 OS in my laptop got crashed without me or anyone messing with any windows files. so i ran windows setup from a bootable USB. it was going good for a few minutes and eventually ended with an error. tried different versions of windows still it didn't work. it was then i visited a nearby lenovo service center. when i told my problem they quickly inserted a cd and ran a test from boot. in a few minutes they said my hard drive is dead and has to be replaced. what test would they have done to figure out the errors in HDD. can you please explain
how do i test if my hard drive is damaged directly from boot?

The HDD manufacturers have tools specifically for their drives to test.
For instance:
Seagate - SeaTools
Western Digital - Data Lifeguard Diagnostics
Or, anything that can read the S.M.A.R.T. data from the drive.
For instance:
