Looking to build a new PC for gaming and possibly VR. My budget is about $1,000 excluding monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I've seen several builds and done some research but have been left with a few questions.

1) AMD or Intel for CPU? Considering the Intel i5 6500 (non-k). I've used AMD before and been happy with them. From what I've read though they run hotter and are more prone to breaking. Is it worth saving the $$ and going AMD?

2) Similarly, should I go 970 or 390? If I go intel w/ CPU, any drawback to going with the 390?
Pascal and Polaris come out soon, probably June. Is it worth waiting on those cards? New architecture, possibly appreciable improvements even on the first editions? And even if not, will that lower the price of the 390 or 970 about $100? Also, I'm hoping to get a 1440p monitor, but unsure if that'll work with either of those cards on high settings. In that case I'd be going 1080p.

3) Been looking at the H170 mobo. Seems like a ton of options around $80-140. Some advertise better onboard audio. Is there really a big difference, or am I better off getting a soundcard if I want good quality audio?

Many thanks!!

With this being a VR machine, I would probably lean more toward recommending an i7, and an R9 390. This is a bit over budget, but I believe would be a good start, for a VR/Gaming PC, at that price point. Waiting on Pascal isn't a horrible idea, if you can wait that long.
