I'm in the process of upgrading my ~7 Year old PC i build in '09.

Current specs:

MSI GX790-G65 Mobo
AMD Phenom X4 955 3.2 Ghz
4 x 2GB Gskill Ram 1333
Geforce GTX 275
800W EVGA PSU

Planned New Specs:

Swapping Geforce GTX 275 for EVGA Geforce 960 FTW - on order being shipped
Swapping 4 x 2GB gskill for 2 X 8GB Kingston Vram 1600 - Purchased and failed to post

Problem:

The mobo and AMD CPU only support 1333 speed ram unless i OC to 240x15 = 3.6ghz , considering the age of the CPU i don't want to OC, also the new GPU will kick off more heat into the overall system, and i dont want to invest in extreme cooling solutions on such an old CPU.

I tried installing the 2 X 8GB 1600 ram and adjusting speed to 0.75 factor to drop to 1333, timings at 10-10-10-30.

Checksum bad.

My bios is still in version 1.4, current version is 4.4.

THE QUESTION:

is it worth going through the trouble to update bios (probably take 6 flashes) to attempt to get this new ram in there, then downfactor it's speed and hope it works?

can this setup even recognize 8GB sticks?

I initially bought these because AMD 955's run better with 2 sticks in dual channel than 4 stick configs.

will i need to update my bios anyway to put 4 X 4GB sticks in?

HELP! lol...

no been there done that, but thanks

just review that g skill amd set up guide and read the replies posts to it -- you'll see what I'm getting at

my amd rig [990fx ] had a tough time with 2x8 1600 would work fine with one stick but not 2 or 4

my buddies worked fine with 4x8 1866 and with my 1600

anyway just my build just flat did not take any 8gb sticks unless it was just one ?

may fal in to what said from here ??

''Now I can speculate why so few 8G DIMMs may only work with your...CPU/board. Many of them use memory chips that are not compatible with the AMD FX IDC. That looks like one out of many possible reasons''

like me I got a build board / or chip that just did not take to 8gb memory ??

Thanks for your response! I read through your thread and issue and don't think it is what is happening with mine, or at least cannot be sure. My CPU and Mobo are definitely compatible in any case.

The problem with finding a solution is that the CPU/MOBO are old enough that there is no official documentation or references that even consider 8GB memory sticks, because they weren't around yet.

Reading through all the BIOS update changelogs for this mobo, I also was unable to find anything relating to memory support updates. The only hint I have is that some similar 970 chipset boards list a few 4GB ram sticks as compatible.

''My CPU and Mobo are definitely compatible in any case.'' so was mine and in the boards memory list too boot..

I had a asus board my buddy had a gigabyte as long as I only use one 8gb stick or what ever lesser gb in any comb. it ran fine and stable but 2 or 4 of the 8gb sticks wacko even trying his kit the same my kit work great on his board so for me it was just something about 8gb x 2 or 4 was a no go ??

matter of fact I'm running that 2x8 1600 kit in this intel with out issue so its not the memory [and like I said on his board it worked ] so it was the board or the bios [I tried all there were seemed like asus gave 18 of them for ''system stability'' ]

also I use 3 cpus in it fx 6100 and 8150 and a 8350 ?/

so was it I got a crap board [sabertooth 990fx] and unlucky on that ?? my buddy was lucky and had -0- issues with all the ??x8gb kits ?? [[giga 990fx ud3 rev4 ]

its not like amd is known for therr strong memory controllers but I tried 3 different chips and still did not take any ??x8gb kit only if I use one stick in any slot it would run fine ..

go figure , just my bad luck of the draw on that ...

see if this info can help any ??

I have a new theory after reading this:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ddr-dram-faq,4154.html#p2

For AMD setups there is a BIOS manual option for Ganged or Unganged... which I had no idea what it was but i do recall during post seeing mine was set up "Unganged" which means... wait for it... SINGLE CHANNEL. Since i had 2 8GB sticks in a DUAL CHANNEL setup.. IM HOPING this caused my issues, because its an easy fix. I will try when i get home from work and let you know.

I think this is what was happening to you on your AMD rig, it worked with 1 stick (single channel) but not with 2 or 4 (dual channel).

''Congrats, many 955s have problems w/ 1600 period, many more have problems in running 4 sticks of 1600, looks like in the small percentage that has a primo combo of CPU. mobo and sticks''

you can see lots of guys just cant make it work like what 56 pages worth ?
