Hello
I have Dell E5410 Latitude laptop with I5, 4gb, 500 gb disk.

From August last to a month back, I had 5 installs of Win7, all running, no problems.

Then ransomware-virus attacked and I used Linux to format the disk, then installed win7 64 bit, which runs till date.

However, I tried installing win 7 on other partitions, it installs fine, boots once or twice, and after windows update, gets locked in Startup Error. In 10 trials, I tried limiting the Windows update to bare minimum (wifi drivers, touchpad drivers, sp1), but no difference found.

On my last trial, I disabled windows update and it worked for a day. On second day, it again got into the same Startup Errors and no matter how many times I ran the Repair utility, it did not work.

Any ideas on what can be wrong? I know having multiple installs sounds crazy, but all house members need different settings and not satisfied using as different users on same install.

Hi!
I would recommend you to analyse the Windows System Log for the Error events. Check the event Description about what it says. That way you can locate the problem. Try Event Log Explorer as Default application lacks advanced functionality. Post the screenshot here. then it might be more clear.

This time around, I renamed the EFI folder on the flash drive to old-EFI and installed a 64 bit windows. Surprisingly, it did boot well the next morning. I don't know whether this worked as a trick, but it is surely working. I have turned off windows updates from control panel as well as in services and so far it is not giving me any trouble.

the next time it fails, I will surely keep the logs and post here.
