Hello,

So I have been running a ancient Dell XPS 700 with Kentsfield QX6800 @ 3,46 ghz with gtx770 and I am about to upgrade. I have a Z87 mobo sitting around and I want to reuse the gtx770.

I should add that I only play World of Tanks (single core intensive) @ 1080 and do some surfing and stuff. No rendering or anything. My current setup with an SSD gives me the anything between 28 and 60 FPS @ ultra minus a few tweaks. It is clearly held back by the 2007 CPU. I want to be sure that the new setup will max out the game with some solid headroom.

My original intention was to get the G3258 and crank it up severly on the Z87 mobo. But the more I read about it the less sure I am if it is going to be balanced with the GPU. Then again I already have the Z87 mobo, so I would not like to settle for a locked i3 or i5.

In other words, do you think I should bite the bullet and get the unlocked i5 for almost 200 euro more or can I just stick with the anniversary pentium? No doubt the I5-4690K is far better overall but is it worth it for my purpose?

I think the Pentium should be alright as I run wot on max at 1080p with an fx-6300 and an overclocked 270 and average above 50 fps, so you should be good as the pentium is faster than the fx-6300 when running games like wot that are not optimized for multiple cores, plus your graphics card is better than mine. Finally you can also upgrade to the I5 in like a year once the prices go down or once you have the money.

Thanks for the reply. Indeed I am tempted to get an unlocked I5, they are already getting cheaper used as people are moving to Skylake. My point is that I will not really use the extra cores, it is just a "nice to have" thing. Glad to hear that you think the little pentium should be enough for WOT. I will probably go with that, unless I find a supercheap used I5 on ebay. Actually I am looking at a used I5-4670K at 180 eur right now. Tempting...
The G3258 is 70 eur plus 20-50 eur for an aftermarket cooler, so 50-90 euro cheaper and brand new with warranty.
