I have a dead Seagate external hard drive 3TB, and by the looks of it this issue isn't new :( but this hard drive will not power on at all. I've tried different power supplies with the same power levels input/output etc to be sure I didn't give it too much juice; I've even taken it out of the case and plugged it into a USB casing, 3 different cases actually, and no luck...which I know they worked cause I have an extra internal hard drive I tested as well and it had no issues. I used it once to back-up everything and now it shows no signs of life, no sounds/noises, no lights, doesn't feel like anything is spinning. I would appreciate any help or tips! Thank you!

I was going to go ahead and replace the spindle, but I wanted some feedback before doing anything major, since it doesn't make any noises, etc. Thanks again!

Update: The model: It's a Desktop HDD, to be specific.

If your data is important enough, don't do anything with the drive. You can't replace the spindle, and there's a ton of things that can cause a drive to die. I know that DriveSavers offers a free evaluation of your drive. Data Recovery is expensive, but if your data is worth it, don't try to do it yourself, you cant, regardless of what you find on the internet.

lmao hence why i never use seagate hdd's in my mass storage servers, always go with western digital drive, specifically their highest end data center AE versions.

So what you may want to do is check under device manager on ur pc while the hdd is connected properly via a usb sata connector and see if there is a seagate drive under devices somewhere, that would at least confirm the on board sata controller board is good. Also check under disk management to see if the disk is even there, but from the sound of what u said, its likely a dead sata controller on the hdd which u can buy but tis a risky thing.

Ah...on that note..I have a Mac...lol don't judge too hard please! Lol I do a lot of graphic design, and I have a pc laptop but all of this was Mac based. But totally, I'm definitely looking into a WD as we speak, so you mentioning that makes me more confident in that brand. Thanks for the response as well! So far the disk never ever shows up. I may have to bite the bullet and attempt the sata controller replacement..hold my breath an hope for the best! Thanks again!!

Unfortunately Seagate drives have been much more unreliable than WD in the last couple of years. I had one to go out in a 2.5 year old Dell desktop about 8 months ago. You can bet I didn't replace it with another Seagate drive!

Good luck.
