CM Hyper 212 EVO high temps on Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550?

Hello, I have been wondering for a while (well, a year now) why my CPU temps are 50 degrees celsius just like my stock fan? On load, it's 70 degrees celsius. This cooler has the same temps as the stock cooler for some reason even though I had seen videos of people with core 2 quad Q9550 that's at 30 degrees celsius on idle with overclock whereas I overclocked 300 MHz higher, yet it's idling at 60 degrees celsius. My case is the NZXT Phantom 410 with a rear, top and front fan but no fan control since it doesn't work. What could be the problem here? The case fans not being able to be controlled? Thanks.

Also, I first used Deepcool Thermal Grease Z9 and then tried the cooler master one that came with the heatsink, but same temps...

Ah there you are. Even though you might have them tightly fastened, you need all four to get a proper seat. These things work on the microscopic level, so every nanometer of metal that isn't completely against the CPU is going to waste and bringing your temperatures up.

So your saying, that all this time, it was just because it was one bolt that wasn't screwed in that caused the problem, not the case fans operating at some mid-level speed? What about the ambient temperature, can that also cause high temps, since my ambient temp is 42 degrees celsius and I don't know where that bolt went.... :(

You do need all 4 bolts. But maybe only using 2 diagonal bolts would be better than 3, if you can't do all 4.

I never had to try this personally, your results may differ.

Maybe its just time to pull off the heatsink, clean the dust off, clean the old thermal paste off the heatsink and cpu, and reapply fresh thermal paste (and try to find a match for your missing bolt <hardware store?>).

Yea, one of the screws are screwed up. It won't even screw down and when I remove the bracket from the motherboard, it get's stuck and I need to use pliers to take it out so the bracket doesn't properly go in and I only have 3 bolts. Yea, my house is HOT!!!! But even last month when it was cold, the temps were the same...Should I get a new CPU cooler since one bolt is missing and one screw is screwed up?

If you can removed the backplate and it's not stripped, you can chase the threads with a tap. I'm not sure of the screw size and thread, but if you are unsure, take it to a machine shop (the screw and the backplate) and they should be able to sort you out.

If that doesn't work, you may want to contact CM. They are pretty good, if you describe the problem, I'm sure they'll send you out a new backplate and screw set.

And of course as has already been stressed here, to get even pressure between the IHS and heatsink, you absolutely need all four screws. It's even important when installing the screws to tighten them in a cross configuration a little on each one until you have them fully tightened. Do not just tighten one until it bottoms out and then the next and next and so on. This will cause the pressure to be uneven.

And furthermore to whoever said the Hyper 212 EVO is only a little better than stock, this:

and this:

and this:

All of these reviews show that the Hyper 212 EVO beat the stock coolers by a large margin while being much quieter. Furthermore on the more exhaustive reviews, it shows it beating coolers almost twice as expensive.

I'm guessing this the solution, thanks for showing the reviews and giving me the options. I mave have to buy a new Hyper 212 Evo since I have one missing bolt for the bracket at the back and one HSF holder screw that won't screw down...might as well buy a new one, $30 right....Thanks for all your help guys :)

Actually, I'll just buy the mounting kit for the CM H212 Evo from the cooler master store: http://www.cmstore-usa.com/hyper-212-plus-evo-accessories-kit/
Costs $9.99+ $3 shipping to canada ($16 CAD w/ shipping/tax incl.). No need to buy a new HSF!!!!!

Yeah that's a good option.

The Hyper 212 EVO is a very good cooler for the money. It's not the best cooler, but you have to spend almost double to get one that's better.

I was turned onto the Raijintek Themis as a slight better and cheaper cooling solution, but I can't find it anywhere in Canada, so even if I was in the market for a new cooler, I couldn't get it here. Though it's something to remember for the future. I would assume that it will eventually make it's way here.

The Raijintek Themis is on amazon.ca, is it better than the CM H212 EVO? Is it worth it for the Core 2 Quad Q9550 and for newer upcoming CPU's like Kaby Lake/Cannon Lake or Zen?

Thanks.
Also, I live in Canada as well you probably noticed.

Here is a review:

Raijintek Review @ TechPowerUp

Now 3 degrees difference isn't a whole lot of difference, but it is better. The important take away is that it's cheaper while doing it. It is also a bit louder though.

As for whether it's worth it for your setup, I'd just keep what you have. It's cheaper for you just to get a new mount and be done with it. I'm certain that once you get your cooler bolted down properly you'll see lower temps. Now just be sure when tightening the screws that hold the cooler to the motherboard use this type of pattern:

So in a X pattern and only turn each one 1 full turn until you get them all tightened. Of course you don't need to get out a protractor or anything that accurate, but ballpark it. This way you will get the most even mount pressure possible.

Sounds good. Keep us posted on the results when you get the mount kit. It's always good to post the results in threads like this so that when someone else reads this 6 months from now looking for advice, they can see whether the advice you received made a difference or not.

@techgeek: I got the parts and now it's secure evenly, yet the temps are still the same. I remember when it was with the stock fan, I got the same temps? Maybe it's my CPU, if that's possible? Anyways, at least it's secure now....
