Setting up multiple access points on a ethernet network

Hi all,

I have a common problem but I can't seem to find the answer already on the forum.

I have a house that has an Ethernet network, I have a modem/router handling the DHCP, a switch and 3 access points around the house.

The problem is I cannot get the AP to connect to the internet at all. If I plug aPC/Laptop into the same network (any of the socket in the wall) I get internet no problem but the AP's can't.

I have:
Modem/Router: Netgear DGN2200
Switch: Netgear 16 port
AP's: Edimax ac750

Please let me know what I am doing wrong? Happy to set up a static IP for each of the AP's if that will help or go for some better kit like the Ubiquiti AP's but pulling my hair out

Thank you

Did you verify that the APs are set for DHCP? I would recommend that the APs get assigned static IP addresses just to make it easy to find them on the network.

To make sure I am looking at the correct user's manual, are these the EW-7208APC access points?

Is your ethernet cable connected to one of the LAN ports (1 - 4) on the APs?

Hi Kanewolf,

Thanks for your help.

I will try static IP's as soon as I get a chance. It's not something I have done before but it looks fairly straight forward so with a bit of trial and error I should be able to set that up.

Yes they are the EW-7208APC. Yes I made sure the Ethernet goes into the Lan port not the internet port and followed the setup instructions.

When you ask if I verified they are set for DHCP, do you mean there is a setting somewhere I need to change or the device itself may not support functioning in this way?

Thank you

If you went through the setup -- There is a step to "Obtain an IP address automatically" or use a specific address. The automatic IP address option is DHCP.

The Status screen on the AP should tell you if it has a valid IP address.

I think I may have been wrong and the AP is in fact the BR-6208AC
Manual is here: http://www.edimax.com/edimax/mw/cufiles/files/download/manual/BR-6208AC_User_Manual_English.pdf

When assigning a static IP to the AP I require the following information:

IP address : (I have this, it is within the range of the router and outside the DHCP pool)
Subnet Mask : should this be the same as the router?
Default gateway : Again should this be the same as the router? What else could it be called? e.g. Gateway IP address?
DNS : Router is set to get this automatically from ISP but I can find 2 different DNS values in the router status section. Should I just use the primary here?

I had a quick go tonight but was unable to get it to work as yet

Thank you

Yes. AP mode asked for that info

Can you connect to the internet wired using one of the 4 wired ports on the AP? That would demonstrate that the switch in the AP is working and negotiating a connection with the Netgear switch.

Instead of messing with the remote location(s), start by putting the AP in the same location as the switch and use a new cat5e cable to connect them. Does that work?

I will try to connect them locally through a cable that I know works and update the thread.

In my frustration I have bought another AP - Draytek Vigor AP 810. This arrived over the weekend and I set it up following the manual but have only experienced the same issue. This seemed to rule out the physical hardware being the issue and it is likely to be settings. Since I have now tried multiple routers, multiple AP's I thought it could be the switch. So I unplugged it and plugged the cable straight into the back of the modem router but still had the same issue.

They draytek is far easier to configure and I managed to set it up with a static IP, assign it the same details in the router with the MAC address and still it won't talk to the router (Default gateway)

So I have the router at X.0.1 and the AP at X.0.2 and the DHCP pool in the router starting at X.0.6

I must be missing a setting somewhere because as soon as I connect up the AP I can't get through to the router from any PC attached to that AP (or any internet connection of course) even when I manually give that PC an IP address such as X.0.87 in my example.

Is it possible the routers I have used don't allow other AP's on the network? Could it be a cable issue even though I can get internet no problem until I put the AP in the way?

Struggling!

The router doesn't know the difference. Your WIFI connection to the network is just like a wired connection. The AP hides the differences.

Go back to the basics and put them in the same room as the switch.

Are you using the APs in POE mode or with a discrete power supply?

Using a power supply not POE

So I took the AP into the same room as the router and switch and tried to set it up there but I had the same problem. I was not able to get a connection to the internet through the wired lan. I plugged a working cable from my laptop into the AP and another from the AP to the switch. I reset the AP to factory settings as well so that none of the changes I had made previously would cause any problems.

Are you getting link lights on both ends when plugged in with a short cable?

That says that the switch in the unit isn't functioning. Can you try wiring back to the router and skipping the switch?

I see comments on Amazon that the wired ports are 10/100 only and the specs on Edimax page confirms that. It may be some kind of mismatch between your switch and the 10/100 ports on the BR-6208AC.

I was using the Draytek Vigor AP 810. I just tried again, still through the switch and was able to get an internet connection. The AP has an operation mode which when all plugged in and restarted seems to just act as a switch? So I could get the internet on the laptop that was plugged into the Vigor AP, through the switch and into the router. However I wasn't able to login (by putting the IP into a browser) to the AP to change any settings (such as wireless).

I then tried to recreate this back in the remote location I was trying originally but was unable to get connection to the internet through the AP. No internet on the laptop despite trying the same setup

That would say you have multiple problems. The wall wiring may not be any good (or at least not cat5e). But if you cant get logged in to the AP via browser, you have some other problem.

I can log into the AP until I connect the Ethernet connected to the switch and Router. It then seems to change it's IP to fall into the range of the router and then I don't know that ip it has and can't connect.

I guess I can log into the router and find out the connected devices but I still can't get it to work in the remote location of choice. I will try another location and a few other things and come back.

It is Cat5e and the internet works fine (I can stream video etc) but clearly there are some issues I need to keep working on.
