Question about 5GHz and 2.4GHz and bandwidth issues

I have a problem currently - if I try to download anything, it causes huge ping issues for everybody in the house. I've been looking for a way to fix this.

My question is, if I download something whilst using the 5GHz channel on my router, is that going to affect the performance of the 2.4GHz channel or negatively impact any devices that are currently connected to the internet via the 2.4GHz channel?

Thanks for the help!

Solution
While it will not affect the connections using the 2.4GHz radio directly, your use of the 5GHz channel will consume some amount of your ISP connection bandwidth and if you do not have a high bandwidth plan it may affect the other users.

You can run speedtest.net from a wired connection if you don't know your ISP plan level to determine your maximum upload and download speeds. As long as they significantly exceed what you get running it on the 5GHz connection you would be fine.

Thanks you! :) so if my ISP bandwidth is at 70mbps, can I limit my download speed to say 50mbps without causing any interference with other users who may be listening to music or playing an online game, or should I limit it to something significantly lower?

If you have 70Mbps you don't need to worry -- your 5GHz radio connection will not be that high at any distance from the router.

Gaming really uses a fairly small amount of bandwidth, low latency is the key and using only that computer on 5GHz should help keep your latency lower.
