I ran into an issue with my laptop, and I need to format the hard disk which has important data on it (pictures from a holiday, etc). Which software can I use to recover the data that in now on the Hard Disk, but wont be there after I install windows. The data I need to recover is about 3.8GB, and contains pictures, videos and a couple of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents .

Solution
If you have a working PC, I'd suggest taking the laptop drive out, and connecting it internally in the PC.
Copy that 3.8GB off the laptop drive, onto some other drive in the PC.

Replace the drive back in the laptop, and install the OS as needed.

If you have not yet done the " format the hard disk which has important data on it"...
...STOP!

Do NOT rely on any software to recover critical data AFTER a format.
You need to save those elsewhere BEFORE you do this format thing.

I haven't formatted it yet. I'm doing this because i don't have Windows on my Laptop, i only have 689GB of Unallocated space and a partition with 3.8GB of data on it, which i need.
I have a PC, a USB with Windows 8.1 setup on it, and that is the only hard disk in my laptop.

That was literally the same thing I wanted to do. I was just scare to open up the laptop, thinking i might break something, and looked for software to recover the data instead, but none of the guarantee they will recover it after new data is written onto the hard disk.

Drives in laptops are generally VERY accessible and easy to take out. That is a 100% guaranteed solution.

Rather than "kinda/sorta/maybe/don't blame me if the data recovery does not work/pay me money to actually recover the files".
Take the drive out, and copy that data off to another drive. Anything less is a potential fail.
