Are there any AM3+ processors worth buying in 2016?

So currently i have an fx4100 that i bought a few years ago. I'm looking to upgrade my pc before i go to university and am wondering if it is worth buying a processor that will fit my motherboard or buying a new motherboard with a more modern socket.

There may be a CPU upgrade that's worthwhile, but I strongly recommend against buying an AM3+ motherboard today. The CPU upgrade is only worthwhile because it saves you the cost of replacing your motherboard if you wanted to go Intel.

If your motherboard supports 125w CPUs, you could drop in an FX-6300 or FX-8320. If it only supports 95w CPUs, an FX-4300 or FX-8320e would both be mild upgrades. None of these are as fast as an Intel Core i5, and generally slower than an Intel Core i3 too, and if you're going to change your motherboard anyway you might as well move away from AMD.

It depends whether or not you have a quality AM3+ motherboard to begin with.

If you have a Gigabyte GA970A-UD3P, MSI 970 Gaming, Asus M5A97 (non LE), or any 990 boards, then upgrade to a Fx 8xxx if its a good price. However, if you don't have any of the boards mentioned, then your mobo can't handle an upgrade and best to build new system.

To buy a new Intel + mobo + OS would pricier.

P.S. - The 1150 is also dead. No new CPU is being released for that socket. If going for the Intel route, then go with 1151.

If he went 1151 he'd have to buy new RAM unless the one he has runs at 1.35V, but if he's getting an 1151 mobo with DDR3 support then again there's no point going 1151 seeing as it'd be somewhat more expensive. Come on, let's be honest, nobody here with an 1151 CPU is actually upgrading their CPU anytime soon, and certainly not buying another 1151 CPU.
