Surround sound with Astro A40s using an external sound card?

I am looking to buy a wired headset for my MSI laptop, but do not want to buy the mixamp bundle. I have an external sound card, the Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro. If I were to buy the Astro A40s, would I be able to skip on buying the mixamp bundle and use this sound card as my amplifier so I can obtain surround sound? My laptop has an S/PDIF port.

Avoid "gaming" sets. Considering the A40's price, you budget is ~150, so you can get HD518/558 or ATH-AD500x/700x with something like the modmic (other options available too)

I am just struggling to figure out what headset I want for when I'm PC gaming. Looking at all the options. Have any recommendations?
