A friend of mine wants to update from his laptop to a desktop. The above is a rough build that he and another friend put together. He plans to only play 1080p but he would be using it for other things like multi-tasking while playing and college course work. I recommended dropping the 980 to a 970 and going from the i5 to the i7. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like for 1080p gaming the 970 will be more than enough and he could take advantage of the i7 core with multi-tasking/school work. I'll list the questions I have below so it's easier to read.

If you would recommend the i7, which would you replace the i5 with?

Would he better off to go for a liquid CPU cooler rather than a fan since the price isn't too much more?

Any ideas or suggestions for changing the build around or a more optimized build?

His budget is $1300-1400 or less. He's unsure if he'd like to put it together himself so any extra money he can save would probably be put towards having someone put it together if I can't talk him out of it.

Thanks!

Solution

  • ■The i5 should get the job done just fine but I wouldn't talk you out of an i7 either.
■Cryorig H7 is a newer, better cooler than Hyper 212 and cost is similar.
■Get the full size Gigabyte ATX board instead of mATX. Same model without the 'M'.
■GTX 970 is plenty for 1080P. GTX 980 is great too, but poor price to performance ratio.
■Change NEX power supply to much higher quality EVGA 650 G2.

Actually, one more question if you're still around to help @archaic59. Are there any small things I need to remember to order for him? I put down thermal paste, but what about case fans and all the Sata cables? I'm guessing the fans will come with the case and cables with PSU? Is there anything else to remember?

Give me a few minutes to look it over again. BRB.

EDIT: The GA-Z170X-Gaming 5 motherboard will come with 4 SATA data cables. You'll need 3 for your parts list so that's covered. Sata power cables will come with PSU as you said. The case will come with a bag of screws for various stuff for mounting the board. The 300R has 1 fan up front and one in back. This should be enough to keep air moving through the case. You can add another up front if you want but I'd wait and see if it even needs it. You'll have 6 fans (including other parts) already without buying more. I can't think of anything else at the moment.

Switching from Skylake to older Haswell?

Could you recommend a CPU that could keep him ~1400 USD total? I know Skylake is newer but that's about all I know. I personally have the 4770k but my PC is 2 years old or so now.
