I currently have an R9 295x2 crossfired with an R9 290x. I've got another computer that needs a replacement video card. I've purchased an R9 390x and I'm contemplating either swapping out the 290x with the 390x and putting the 290x in the spare computer or just putting the R9 390x in the spare computer. I've read that it's possible to crossfire and R9 390x with an R9 290x.

- Is it possible to crossfire and R9 295x2 with an R9 390x?

- Would this bottleneck either card? If so, is there a way to counteract this bottleneck?

- Have there been any benchmarks performed on such setups?

The 390x, being the faster card, should give you a performance boost. A Radeon can be in an Xfire set up with any other Radeon (hell, with DX12, it can be paired with Nvidia GPUs and Intel's integrated graphics), up to 3 cards
There is no bottlenecking in Xfire setups.
Other than synthetic user benchmarks, no. People who use multiple GPUs are a huge minority in the gaming industry

Also, 3 GPUs in Crossfire doesn't see much a performance gain. AMD and Nvidia don't bother with creating Multi-Gpu profiles past 2 GPUs. In addition to the increased latency you get with multiple GPUs, it's always a better choice to get 1, much more powerful card, than 2 or 3 lesser ones.

I assume you're an enthusiast gamer. AMD and Nvidia need to make Xfire and SLI profiles for games, or else the game will only use one GPU. There are several games without Xfire or SLI support because of this.
Since the people that use multiple cards make up a small minority, Xfire and SLi support aren't priorities for either company. Barely anyone uses 3 GPUs, there aren't many games that use more than 2 GPUs, since Nvidia and AMD don't bother to make profiles for 3 or 4 cards.

No offense, but do you have a citation or something? Arkham Knight is the most recent game I've played that lacks multi-GPU support.

Sorry, busy, There's also diminishing returns with multi-card set ups
Basically, it not a lot of people have 2 GPUs, why would a company put time and money into making profiles for them.
Since even less people use 3 GPUs, why would a company put time and money into that kind of profile
They still do it, but it varies based on the game, and how popular the game is

Thank you. The video's interesting, but I've found that the three GPUs seems to help particularly with my setup (3 monitors that alternate between eyefinity and standard + a television for Netflix/Hulu/Blu-Ray/etc).

The main thing I'm curious about is whether or not the 390x will have difficulty working with the 295x2. The main references I'm seeing to crossfiring those cards is a site stating that a driver update several months ago unlocked the ability of newer generation cards to crossfire with older ones (like 390x with 290x). I'd rather know ahead of time whether or not I can even put the card in a crossfire setup before I start opening up my computer.

If the 295x2 works with a 290x, it should work with an 390x as well

I thought as much, but I guess I was hoping that someone here either had or knew someone who had experimented with that kind of setup.

You could try to find a Reddit user who has such a set up

I'm not sure, but I think you may have forgotten to add the link.
