Recently had my hd 7950 die on me, and was forced to bring my 2900 pro out of retirement. I want to make sure I don't have to do that again, so am currently looking for a decent back up for under 100 while I save up for a 380X.

I've decided on these two

PowerColor hd 6950 1gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131682

or

GIGABYTE R7 360 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125847

I know this has sorta been answered by comparing the hd 6950 to a 750 ti, and a 750 ti is comparable to a r7 360. but I always see contradictory answers.

3dmark benchmarks say the 360 is better then both, passmark says both are better then the 360, Toms gpu hierarchy puts the 360 two tiers lower then both.

So basically all I've gathered is while the 6950 is old and unsupported it is stronger then both, but the 1 gb kills it. But will performance be hit hard enough to make the 360 better, since I only plan on using it for the short term\back up?

Only newer game I plan on playing with them is dark souls 3.

PSU: Corsair TX650
CPU: Phenom 2 x4 965 be (upgrading to 6300 same time I get my 380x)
ram: 8 gb ddr 3

Thank you!

Edit: Sorry meant to put this under Graphics, first post here not sure how to move it...

Solution
Your CPU, even the FX 6300, will hold back a 380X, so no need to go that high unless you will be moving it to another system soon.

Also the Corsair TX and CX models are lower end units, not very suitable for a high power system. That may actually have contributed to the video card dying.

I'd just get the R7 360 and a better power supply and stick with those till you can get a next gen AMD CPU or an Intel one.

Awesome, thanks guys, bought the 360.

The 7950 lived 3 years so I didn't think about the PSU being the problem, thought it was constant heating up and cooling and something finally giving. But makes sense in hindsight now because there might of been some warning signs a few months before death.

Little bummed to hear the cpu upgrade won't help too much either, but my board is old and I suppose it's time for a new one of those as well.

thanks again!

Yes, you can wait a bit for Zen from AMD or situation and prices for new Intels to stabilize, all of that should be happening this fall.
What is your MB ? If it could take an FX 6350 and do some serious OC, it would be a good interim measure for better performance.

Unfortunately, I don't think it can. mobo is a GA-880GM-USB3 (rev. 3.1). It shows two visheras on the list, the FX-6300 and FX 4350, but the 4350 is listed as not supported, not even sure why they put it on there. Not looking good for this board, I'll probably just save up and wait till fall.

Yes, sell your board and CPU, people still will buy those X4 systems, and get an Intel i5-6400 or 6500. Will be about $300 for that, with another $50 for DDR4 RAM. Or you can use your existing RAM and go for a last gen 1150 socket i5 which will still be very good and you will save a bit on the RAM.
