I plan on getting a new PC and I'm trying to figure out what all I need to get it set up and working. After doing some research I'm assuming I need a Modem and Router to connect to the internet.

Since there is another Desktop in my household will I be able to use mine without interfering with it? Can I just plug the Modem into the wall jack without having to have a technician come over and do anything? Do I even need a modem and router? If you can clear anything up for me it or just give me a rundown of the basics, it would be much appreciated. :??:

Alright so you will have you modem which is connected to either cable, fiber, or satellite, depending on your situation. The modem translates the traffic over either of those platforms i just mentioned and outputs as ethernet. The ethernet then goes into a router where the packets for you LAN are managed and allows you to communicate with the internet. How are these computers connected to the LAN? WiFi or ethernet cable? If they are wifi then you just need a router with built in wifi which most household grade routers do and you just connect the computers and you are good. if they are via ethernet the router will have around 4 ports on the back which all the computer will plug into. if you ever need more ports you could get a switch...

Hope this summed it up for you, I tried not to get too complicated which some enthusiasts may cringe at while reading this.

I'm going to connect it via Ethernet, and it will only be one, will this affect the other desktop I have in my house? And will I need a technician to come and turn on anything? Or should it all be turned on already since I already have another computer running.

Thanks.

No it wont affect the other computer. If you dont have ethernet (CAT 5, 5e or 6) in you walls then you need someone to run those, or just thrown them on the floor if you are lazy lol. If you need a technician to set things up is a question you have to answer, I mean it will be fairly simple however if you dont know how to get into your routers settings and configure everything, you can either look up some videos on basic setup for a home networking system, or get a technician

Alright, I'm almost done leaving you alone, but how do I tell what wall outlet I have? It doesn't say CAT 5 or anything, is it a phone jack?
