Hi,

I thought the decision to upgrade would be easy. Get the latest one right? However some people said it isn't worth it. I currently have an i7-3930k. The i7-6700k should be miles better, I thought. On CPU Benchmark the i7-3930k is listed as being higher than the i7-6700k. Whats going on, my current one should be miles down the list by now yeah? If the i7-6700 is not that much better is there a different one you would recommend.

(I also know I need new MB and RAM for the i7-6700, I have those picked out)

Any help would be really appreciated,

Thanks
Dave

Solution
well using the same board, I got a 5930K up to 4.56GHz for a render server, so I would say 4GHz easily. just bear in mind, how much higher than that is really silicon lottery. 4.2 GHz would be pretty reasonable to hope for.
your current CPU is great, it has two extra cores, and thus 4 extra threads, and you can overclock it just like a 6700K. single core performance wise the 6700K will edge out, but the difference is not very noticeable. unless you really want to get a new system, I would keep that current one.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the reply. Does that mean there would be no CPU I could upgrade to that would perform better than the one I currently have? See I have been given the money to buy some new parts for my PC and the CPU is the oldest part I have.

Thanks
Dave

Actually, I was thinking. Right now if I try to oc my CPU it overheats no matter what I do. I was on http://www.overclock.net/f/ and they couldn't get it to work. Some said it was the motherboard causing the issue. Something about a "North Bridge" issue, I could be naming that wrong, it was a while back. Maybe if I get a new motherboard instead I could overclock it again to get the best performance from the current CPU. The board I have is the ASUS P9X79 LE ATX. Would anyone know what the best board to get for OCing, also one good for gaming? Or should I move this post to a different location?

Thanks
Dave

I agree with the overclock idea, that chip will be a beast once you get it above 4.0 GHz.
well the toughest part with a new motherboard, is finding one from a reputable seller. those boards are sold out in quite a few places, it seems ebay might be where you have to look.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-P9X79-DELUXE-MOTHERBOARD-LGA-2011-INTEL-X79-ASUSTEK-I-O-SHIELD-/252365688655?hash=item3ac22acf4f:g:MiUAAOSwkEVXG9Yo
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-Sabertooth-Intel-X79-Chipset-LGA2011-Motherboard-/131790079374?hash=item1eaf4d058e:g:ZI0AAOSwDN1UNuBg

those two are good bets, but it is a used item on ebay, so there is some buyer risk.
you could add the motherboard tag to this if you want some more motherboard oriented motherboard people to find this.

OK, this is what I am thinking. The sabertooth board it around 400 bucks, 450. I could get the new cpu, new board and new ram for only a bit more. If I overclock the new cpu, 6700k I should get close to oc my current cpu, yeah? Then I could see my current 3930 on ebay. What do you guys think?

sounds pretty solid, you could also go for a 5820K if you want the extra cores for say rendering. it might cost slightly more, but there would be a good performance pay off once you overclock the 5820K. if you do not need 6 cores then yes I would do that.

This is what I can get
Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor
Asus X99-A/USB 3.1 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard
G.Skill TridentZ Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3333 Memory

Is that MB decent and the RAM?
