overclock AMD fx6300 on a gigabyte 97a-ds3p motherboard

Solution
Well, that's digital VRM so it's better than ordinary VRM but cooling would be good to have. At least a fan over it. FX 6300 is 95W processor and at 4,1 -4.2 GHz it should be at about 125 W which is still acceptable for it. If it's good enough for 125W processors like 8350 - 8370, it should be good enough for 6300 @4.2. After market CPU cooler is a must for those frequencies.

Did you mean GA-970A-DS3P? Well, that board has a 4+1 power phase, so you might not achieve a high stable overclock with it. Make you have good airflow and cpu cooler.

Try this video, the board used is ASUS but the concept is the same.

Thank you for the information it will be very helpful

Overclocking on a 4+1 phase board - if its available where you live then always & forever the raijintek themis mate.
http://www.raijintek.com/en/products_detail.php?ProductID=9

untouchable for simultaneous cpu & vrm cooling imo.

4.2ghz (which has already been suggested) is probably about where your'e at with the ds3p in all honesty,& you could do that with almost any decent 120mm tower but it doesnt hurt at all to keep the vrm's cool too.

That looks like good CPU cooler too.

the pallas is 'insanely' good mate - not the absolute cheapest option but still the best value for money downblower around, youd have to spend twice as much on a noctua nh-c14 to get the same kind of performance.

Yes, even with my Scythe Mugen3 and two fans on it, on 8+2 passively cooled VRM I added one 40mm fan on it. I tried smoke test on that setup and air stream completely bypassed VRM cooler. I also have another 120mm fan at the back of the case so it makes 3 120mm fans in line but VRM still stayed shaded from it.
