Are they using the same mounting brackets? I checked their product page and it just says that they are all using SecuFirm2™ Mounting Kit. Is there any variation to this? The reason I'm asking this is because of this review stating that NH-D15's mounting bracket won't fit the Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1. However based on this review using NH-U12S, he was able to mount it without issues on the Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1. If they are using the same mounting brackets then chances are that the NH-D15 will work.

EDIT: Just noticed that the mounting brackets of both coolers are installed differently in their normal orientation. I wonder if that is the reason why U12S does not have any mounting issues.

yes tehy use the same mounting bracket, the difference is the U12S "standard" bracket placement for a vertical fan is the opposite of the larger NH-d14/Nh-D15 fan, so the same bracket placement, result in U12S in vertical, but the NH-D114/15 in horizontal
blame Asus and their excessive VRM heat sink shield cover ;)
ask yourself: do you "need" that specific board? or do you just "want" it, you can always find another high quality board with less "excessive" cover, that would fit your cooler,
or a smaller CPU cooler perhaps, since Skylake cools very well even on air, super large air coolers isnt "needed", smaller ones do fine/great, like Cryorig h7, Cooler Master hyper 212 EVO, and such sizes
