A10 7700K overclocking - Trying to reach 4.5 GHz

Hello everyone,

I have an A10 7700K with a pretty decent after market cooler (Gammax 300) and my goal is to reach 4.5 GHz .

I tried it with a Vcore of ~1.45-1.46 but it was unstable and I was getting a BSOD if I did anything demanding (such as gaming).

Right now I've pulled back at 4.3 to be stable.

Should I increase my Vcore more in order to achieve stable performance at 4.5 , or should I just pull back at a lower freq like I've done now?

I am a bit scared to increase the Vcore more, because I think 1.46 is pretty high (stock was 1.33), but on the other hand I don't know how this CPU works when overclocked (with my mobo also) and what Vcore it really needs.

Temps aren't a problem since I am getting around ~35c idle and ~60 on load.

Tell me what do you believe (or know), and if anyone has the same CPU as me, or any other similar from the A10 series, tell me how much you overclocked it, what Vcore you have.

PS, my Mobo is a Gigabyte F2A68HM.

You should be able to increase the VCore to 1.5v relatively safely (over 1.5v is kinda risky) as long as your temperatures are fine, and I would try that if you're still getting BSODs, but there isn't much more you can do (that I know of, anyway). I've reached a similar situation with my a10-5800k.

You asked about what OC setting other people have with a10 cpus... My 5800k is at 4.5ghz @1.4v, like you I get BSODs if I try to go higher.

So, in order to also bump the thread since I got no reply, I would like to add that I increased the vcore a bit, up to 1.47. The system was still unstable at 4.5 Ghz. I actually got a BSOD just when PRIME95 started stressing.

If anyone has the same cpu or knows, please tell me, should I increase the Vcore even more or just stay here at 4.3 where I am stable?

I've read that I should never go more than 1.5v, however it was referring to another AMD cpu and despite the fact that I started from 3.4 ghz @1.33v, my temperatures are pretty good to stay at 4.3 I believe.

You may be hitting the limits of the power delivery on your motherboard, or simply the limits of your CPU. Power consumption goes up exponentially as you increase clocks and voltage.

Anandtech did an overclocking review on Kaveri:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7677/amd-kaveri-review-a8-7600-a10-7850k/9

When AMD moved production of their APUs from Global Foundaries 32nm process (used in all previous CPUs) to TSMC's 28nm process, the CPUs lost some of their maximum overclocking potential. Older-gen 5xxx and 6xxx CPUs were able to attain higher clockspeeds with less voltage.

There are plenty of good reasons why AMD made the switch, but overclocking isn't one of them.

Okay so after hours of testing I came to a conclusion. Everything seems to be fine at 4.4 GHz and ~1.46-1.47 .
Its fully stable. I think I could go even a bit lower on Vcore and still be fully stable but I'll just leave it as is.

However, if I go for 4.5, my PC will just BSOD when I put it to stress test or something demanding, even at 1.48-1.49 Vcore.
Maybe its the Mobo not allowing it to go any further than 4.4 . Maybe its something else.
I am not willing to go any more than 1.5 Vcore to test, so I am staying at 4.4 .
