Hi all, looking at ordering a new computer for my brother in the next 2 weeks since it'll be a lovely 25th present for him, well mainly since his previous computer had a mental break down and its time for him to upgrade.

He's upgrading from a
i5 2310, 6850 1G, 4GB 1600mhz ram, 750wat PSU, Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3

He wants to keep his Coolmaster Storm Scout Case which limits GPU's down to 240MM which is annoying but that's what he wants. His PSU is also brand new it's a Antec 750 Watt 80+ gold.

So basically just upgrading CPU, Ram, MOBO and GPU as well as throwing in a SSD To help boot quick. What I'm currently not sure on is what MOBO or RAM I should go with, he's never going to OC his CPU or run more than one GPU so I don't need anything flashy. And the ram? is 3000mhz an overkill or is that going to be fine?

What I'm currently looking at getting for him is;

CPU: i5 6500
MOBO: Not entirely sure on what I should get possibly Asus Z170 Pro?
Ram: Corsair Dominator Platinum 3000mhz DDR4
GPU: Gigabyte R9 390X 8GB open to options but limited to 240MM in length.
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

This is the PartPicker Link - It's currently sitting at $1400 and I can't really budge that to go any higher. Just wondering on what I could change to make it run smoother or even better, and help would be appreciated thanks.

He already has a Monitor, keyboard, mouse and headphones.

Solution
Get the ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming, has tons of features that ROG series motherboards have and comes at a cheap price. You can get a cheaper RAM cause higher frequencies aren't worth it, you can grab a 2666 Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB kit for less. For CPU cooling get either the Hyper 212 or Cryorig H7 rather than going for AIO's.

if the build is mainly used for gaming just stay on i5

not-overclocking build:

i5-6600
asrock h170 performance
corsair vengeane lpx 2133mhz cl13
gpu probably is better to wait for new generation in july or otherwhise a r9 390 for fullhd or a furyfor 1440p

z170 board are for overclockers, they support ram with frq higher than 2133mhz but you won't see tangible differencies.

OC build:

i5-6600k
asrock z170 extreme 6
cryorig a40
corsair vengeance lpx 3000mhz cl15
