how do i recover the lost product key for windows 7, after a duplicate version of windows has been installed. I am unable to retrieve the from the tag/sticker behind the laptop.

If you perform a factory recovery you won't be asked to enter the Product Key.

I'm curious to know why a duplicate version was installed?

can't recover it now unless you have an oem installed recovery partition like most laptops do these days. if that's gone and you can't read the sticker, then you've lost the key and need a new one. only way to get that is to buy windows again.

just the way it works. the key is not stored anywhere else for you to get to it.

Math Geek is correct. OEM Factory installations do not have Product Key in the registry like retail installations do.

are u sure that if i perform a factory reset , will i be able to get back the original windows version coz I am running now on a pirated version of windows so i am quite doubtful.

if you have a factory recovery partition, then it will remove EVERYTHING from the partition and put back what it was like when it came out of the box. that's what it is intended to do. including activating itself like it was when you first opened it.

it's your only choice unless you wish to buy a new windows key. plug it in, start the recovery and walk away as it will take a while to finish depending on the laptop specs
