hey guys
i'm short on cash and need a OS and i have an old dell with win xp on it. i was wondering if i could transfer it to a new pc and upgrade to win 7 still.

Solution

I'll just go ahead and say it's a safe bet that copy of Windows for $30 is not legal. So while it may work for some time, Microsoft can disable / deactivate that copy at any time.
The DELL will have an OEM license. You can not legally move it to another PC. You will need to buy a new OS.

Depending on what you do with your PC, you may want to look at Linux (which is free). Short of gaming, in my opinion Linux is a much better OS choice.

I don't want Linux because the PC will be used heavily for gaming and games aren't optimized for Linux.

You're going to have to buy win 8 or 10. The prices for remaining versions of win 7 are sky high.

Win 7 premium is $30 and win 10 is $70 - 110, I'll take 7

Yeah there are lots of sites that claim to sell keys for $30, and in most cases they do sell keys. That doesn't mean it's legal. So you're still basically pirating software, but you're paying for it. Which will make it that much worse if Microsoft decides to black-list the key you paid for. Heck if you search around, some of the sellers have been known to send out a new key when the buyers key does get deactivated, however it still doesn't make it legal.
