Hi guys I'm using the seagate ST1000DL002-9TT153 hdd and its running very so, i used some programs to look at whats making it slow.
Speccy showed:
Max. Transfer Mode SATA III 6.0Gb/s
Used Transfer Mode SATA II 3.0Gb/s
i got the msi h81m-p33 mobo which got 2 sata II slots and 2 sata III slots
i tried using every single slot but speccy always showed Sata 2 is there anything i could've done wrong? like wrong cable or smth. or do i need to update my bios?

Hey there, leonnick.

You can run a benchmark tool and see what kinf of speeds you're getting and if they are similar to the ones that the drive should be capable of reaching. You can check that thread for a few suggestions: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2095766/free-hard-disk-drive-benchmark-diagnostic-utility.html. Please post a screenshot of the results (you can use imgur.com to upload the image).

You should be aware that even if SATA III allows speeds of up to 600MB/s, this is not reachable by any HDD not even the SATA II speeds (300MB/s), as most HDDs have speeds around 150-180MB/s.

Also, check you motherboard's "user's manual" in order to make sure which are the SATA III ports and that you've connected the drive to one of them.

edit: Oops, looks like this really is a SATA II drive indeed. @Wolfshadw has answered your question correctly.

Hope that helps.

No mechanical drive can read/write at full SATA3 speeds. Max transfer speeds are around 200MBytes/s.
So - for mechanical drives it's no difference, if it's using SATA2 or SATA3.

SATA 3 speeds are only achievable by SSDs.
And yes - not all sata cables can run in SATA3 mode.

The HDD is only sata 2- 3.0gbs and 5900rpm and is a green , optimised for storage use, not as a main
