Brand new PC, gtx 970 code 43 driver problems

Hey all,

Yesterday I received my pc which has the following specs:

asus z170-p
i7-6700k
msi NVidia gtx 970
8gb ddr4 (2400mhz)
coolermaster 700w psu
corsair neutron xt ssd
seatgate hdd
Win 10 Home 64-bit

Once I had set everything up (installing windows etc, the usual...) I noticed the resolution was terrible. Stuck at 800x600. I downloaded the latest drivers for the gtx 970 then GeForce experience launched and basically redownloaded and installed the drivers I already supposedly had. After restarting my computer the resolution still couldn't be changed and I had a code 43 error in device manager.

I tried uninstalling the gtx 970 in device manager and restarting. There would then be the Microsoft basic adapter in place of the gtx 970 and, sometimes, the resolution would automatically set itself to 1080p after a restart when I did this and sometimes it wouldn't. After trying out several games it was still clear the gtx 970 was not in effect.

I then tried the DDU tool removing all NVidia files etc, normal mode, safe mode and still couldn't successfully install the drivers. In GeForce experience there is sometimes a weird bug where after I install the drivers for a second time, certain tabs show me to have a gtx card and some say my system doesn't meet the requirements. Still have a code 43 though.

I then tried a fresh install of windows 10 (didn't have an optical drive on my case which made things more complicated), went to the NVidia site, downloaded the drivers manually without GeForce experience, restarted and yet the problem is still persisting.

It doesn't seem like there is anything wrong with the card as I can clearly see the fans spinning on it inside the case, also, I'm not getting any beeps when the pc boots up. One weird thing I did notice was that in device manager, under display adapters, there is no mention of intel hd graphics which I thought came with the i7-6700k? There are also no programs that make mention of intel in my control panel add/remove programs section.

There has been some noticeable distortion but very brief sort of link a blink on the screen when it's starting a program or something which I put down to the fact that the device still isn't working with its drivers.

Here is a few images that might give some additional info: http://imgur.com/a/HtUSj

Appreciate any ideas!

(I know there's a lot of these threads but I couldn't find many that had the intel hd graphics not showing up or the GeForce experience installing the drivers successfully all be it multiple times but still getting a code 43)

Solution
New GPU came today and so far so good, no problems, no code 43, no shitty resolution :D

DXdiag actually shows me my gtx970 now and has WDDM listed as 2.0 so the other card must of been faulty.

You never think these things will happen to you considering my pc came with protection inside but I guess it just goes to show that sometimes you just can't avoid buying faulty hardware.

Hi Proofy, thanks for your answer. I had already tried that, even the CCleaner. But I did it again in the exact steps you posted to be sure I wasn't doing something in the wrong order.

Just after I installed geforce experience and it downloaded the driver for me, it then said installation complete (as it has done so many times). The problem is that it then says checking for updates and says a new driver is available for your gpu to download, showing me the exact driver I had just installed!

Also, the tabs all say I don't have the driver. However, I have not been prompted to restart my computer by windows or nvidia? Should I try that first then try the download a second time? It seems that it's only after the second occasion of installing the driver that I get prompted for a restart and yet even that doesn't fix the problem.

You don't have to restart computer anymore after installing nvidia gpu drivers anymore... I have GTX 770 and I have always installed my drivers via gexperience without needing to restart pc afterwards.

It shouldn't give you 2 driver updates withing a minute that's wierd.. can you check what card did gexperience read from your hardware, should be somewhere in the options

Ah, the games tab and my rig tab contradict each other.

On the games tab it says Microsoft Basic adapter and then my normal specs below (i7-6700k, 8gb ram, win 10)

On my rig it recognises that I have a gtx 970 but where it says driver version there is nothing.

It seems like it's trying to install the drivers for the microsoft basic adapter.

Also, I just noticed that my driver model is WDDM 1.3. Shouldn't this be WDDM 2.0 for windows 10?

You're correct, they should be WDDM 2.0

You can download it here http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/96883/en-us

Restart PC after installing it just to make sure it made changes

You will probably have to do the steps again what I commented before...

1) use DDU to uninstall and erase the driver and uninstall Gexperience from control panel, then remove gexperience files after you uninstall it make sure nothing is left

2) clean registry with ccleaner = https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

3) Install gexperience again and download the driver via it

Okay, nothing is working still. I'm going to try a fresh install yet again. Is it possible that someone could list me the precise order I should be doing things in to ensure things go smoothly? Also, could windows updates be interfering and causing corruption issues? I'm running out of answers, the whole thing just seems bizarre to me. Almost like the system components aren't functioning together. As I mentioned before, my intel 530 graphics aren't even showing up on device manager (in fact I don't have an intel control panel or anything) and if I try to install drivers from their website it will inform me that my system is incompatible...

Dx diag definitely shows my i7-6700k and 8gb Ram though...This system should be mega quick but even web pages are taking forever to load (something to do with the graphics on them?), and it's definitely not my internet.

Did you pick up some virus, installed some software that you think it's a bit shady?

Anyway for windows installation just reinstall windows that you have and then drivers in the following order:

1. Motherboard Chipset
2. SATA Controller (IF APPLICABLE)
3. Video
4. Audio
5. Network
6. Modem (IF APPLICABLE)
7. USB 3.0 (IF APPLICABLE)
8. Windows Updates

Make sure that you have windows 10 installed before you install these drivers or you will have to install all over again, for example going from windows 7 to windows 10 you have to install again 50% of the drivers.

I've had this issue as soon as I had the pc so I don't think it would be a virus. I've only downloaded trusted tools from trusted sites. The one thing that is bugging me is that after I uninstall the gtx 970, when I scan for new hardware the screen flickers and it doesn't appear. Therefore when I try to install the new drivers I'm not sure they're getting through to the gtx 970. Rather installing for the basic display adapter.

I also just tried to use a different port than hdmi but had the same result.

I'll try a few more things then go for the reinstall if nothing works. Cheers!

I've tried the DDU tool and installing the drivers in safe mode but I still had no luck. The drivers are installing, they're just not installing for the gtx 970 because it doesn't say anything next to driver version for my gtx 970 everytime I try to install for them.

Also, the gtx 970 only appears after I've installed geforce experience and the drivers. When I scan for it in device manager it doesn't refresh, I'm just left with microsoft basic adapter.

You can try this then after you uninstall your GTX 970 drivers once again

1. Turn off the computer and unplug
2. Remove Graphic card
3. Plug the monitor to your video output
4. Turn on the computer
5. Click on start and type msconfig
6. Select the Boot tab and click on the box that says Safe boot with minimal selected.
7. Apply then click ok.
8. DO NOT RESTART.
9. Shut Down computer and unplug
10. Install Graphic card
11. Turn on the computer (should boot into safe mode)
12. Go into Device Manager
13. Expand Display Adapter
14. Disable the Intel(R) HD Graphics driver. (DO NOT UNINSTALL)
15. Click the start button and type msconfig
16. Unclick Safe boot
17. Restart

I will try this but I don't think I receive any output from my monitor when I use the integrated graphics on the motherboard.

Unless completely removing the gpu might force the intel hd graphics to operate.

After reinstalling windows and all the drivers again, the gpu could still not be detected properly by device manager. I phoned up the company the custom built my pc and they advised me to do the same as you did (proofy), take out the gpu and plug it back in. I tried it and still had no luck so it appears to be a faulty gpu and I was given an RMA form to fill out. Really hope it is just a faulty gpu yet it makes me sad that I wasted all that time trying to fix something that couldn't be if that is the case haha. Anyway, I'll keep you guys posted in the near future to let you know how it turns out.

Aye, well most of the time it's human mistake but sometimes thing as hardware faulty can happen. After all you can't expect out of 1000 graphic cards produced that every single one is going to be perfect. Hope you get this problem fixed and escape further unpleasantness :)

Well the thing is that once I did all the steps and shutdown the pc, restarted, downloaded the drivers etc, I was prompted for another restart. When I restarted the resolution went from clear 1080p with the microsoft basic display adapter to really distorted 1080p with my graphics card which then came up again with a code 43. Everything seems to be pointing to the gpu

Well windows 10 can install the driver itself once you restart your pc even if you removed the driver with ddu.

You can refer to this link if you didn't send your card for rma.

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/861231/nvidia-amp-windows-10-how-i-solved-the-code-43-error-/

As for error code 43 it happens in windows 10 where uninstalling the Virtu MVP fixes the issue. It's all on the link above that I gave you, give it a try

Sorry for late reply. Thanks for sharing. Another nice attempt at solving this but it failed unfortunately. I found the 2 nvidia drivers that were supposedly causing the bother and hid the updates for them but it also didn't solve the problem. After I went through the process and restarted, back to square one, 800x600 res again.

I sent the card away yesterday though so I'll hopefully hear back soon.
