Would you be able to run a I-7 5960x without any graphics card? i know that the cpu has no GEM and all mobo's in the architecture do not have graphics on board? also what would you be able to do with the CPU and all the required components like ram etc. excluding graphics card?

You could run it headless by telnet/SSH/Remote terminal into the system. Be a bitch to install it unless you have IPMI-enabled motherboard. Not many consumer-grade motherboards do have IPMI, for those look to SuperMicro, etc.

Update to emphasize that NO motherboard for this processor will have on-board graphics.

Second update: $37. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487222

For the secound question i was asking what could you do without any graphics card, but all components in order to run a PC

EDIT: my preference for this is for an assignment i have to write a report specifying whether to go with an i5 4690k or the i7 5960x and other components but no graphics card is listed in the requirements there will be no graphics card

just for general use for assignments and to play some games the games are not stated nor which processes will be run

It would be hard to do much with a pc that had no graphic output. Even installing an os and other things unless you had a way of running an auto installer or something. How would you know what settings you're altering, any message screens that pop up etc? Unless maybe running it with remote terminal and even then it's usually done once windows is set up which it would be infinitely easier to do with a monitor attached. I'd say get a gpu, even a cheap one. Something to output display.

Hd 5450's are still selling for less than $20 in the u.s. No there won't be any x99 motherboards with a display header/port because none of the cpu's for the 2011v3 socket feature integrated graphics. I'm sure they figure if you have $1000 for a cpu you probably have $20-30 for a graphics card.

based on the CPU the other choice is what i will go with as you have said no gpu no gaming. The assignment doesn't revolve around a gaming build it is a based report on gathering my knowledge on pc components and recommending them based on what is required of the system. as gaming is a requirement and in order to do this the system would need a GPU this CPU is not a viable option.

Thank you all for your contributions and helping me out much apreciated!!!!
