Hi All

My computer recently gone off and I believed it was the motherboard, hence I bought a m5a78l-m/usb3 for replacement. (I understand is an old board, but this is just what I need for this old PC.)

I originally had 4 corsair 4GB (2x2GB) RAM, after replacing this motherboard, although my computer is back to life, the RAM doesn't show up correctly, is only showing 8GB, in both Windoes 7 sys info and the BIOS at start up.

I tried to use only 1 4GB RAM, and it recognised 2GB only. I tried all 4 of these RAM, and they are all showing only 2GB. This makes me thing my RAMs are all ok, but somehow the motherboard doesn't recognise the RAM correctly.

Can someone please help me on this?

Many thanks
Victor

i had a similar problem on mine. It would only recognize one of my sticks. I just resated them until it worked. I dont know why it did it but it worked ever since. id just try that. See if its a dim slot on the board.

I did that and all RAM is recognised as 2GB only

I have checked the official website of Asus and the BIOS is the latest. All 4 of the RAM are same brand same model, so I don't think it is mixing.

How may I raise the DRAM voltage and set the CPT voltage please?

I can't even get through the fill up form, it asks VGA vendor all sort of stuff, but I am using onboard display output.

Thanks, I m wondering my problem of the RAM here would be an indication on my power supply issue as well?

The psu has nothing to do with that, that board I use to own, main problem I had with it was the bios chip.
After a few short months, the motherboard had irq issues, not even epic asus technicians could give me an answer for.
Nor fix it correctly after being sent twice for rma support, so its a direct motherboard problem.
Get in contact with them by phone soon, if they cannot find a solution to fix it right buy a msi or asrock board.

I thought (or I hope it is the root cause of everything weird!) the PSU is behavoiuring instably and hence the CPU n the RAM are under voltage

Much appreciate! Do you think both (power button and RAM) are the problem of a defective motherboard please?

No to be sure of that. have a way to test your ram into another computer.
Make sure to call asus and explain the whole problem to tier 3 tech support technicians.

I have talked to them, all they said is the RAM I used, CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 is not officially supported, as stated in their document, so they can not guarantee the performance.

does CPU-Z tell me what voltage is the RAM supplied please?

Yes it does, open up cpu-z again and check the spd tab, that will tell you the current voltage.
To make sure its correct, go back to the bios page and check the memory to make sure it says the same thing and adjust carefully.
If asus told you the ram isn't compatible with the mobo, I would leave well enough alone and look into a new set of supported memory.

This will work for that motherboard, I had my current kingston memory in it and it worked fine.
This black edition has abit more speed, so it'll be good for games and desktop productivity which amd is mighty good at.

Thank you very much for continuing give me support!

I have taken a shoot of the CPU-Z, basically all slot shows the same thing.

Could you please explain me a little bit how to understand this info?

As you can see, the model cmx4gx3m2a1600c9 is a two 2GB memory modules, total 4GB XMS Memory kit for dual channel systems, 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.65V, but CPU-Z only showing 2048Mbytes and max bandwidth 667MHz.

The SPD is a little chip with usually 8 connections and is located in the corner of the RAM's PCB.
It contains prefigured data of speed/timings/voltage factors.

I believe the EPP is the default the RAM is set to run at and the JEDEC is the optional speed/timing/voltage defaults available.
The JEDEC is actually a standard set by the manufacturers that reflect various required safe stable voltage.
I'm not electronics expert but there is more info available on the net on that.

The below is a DDR2 reference BTW. The voltage in the reference may not pertain to your RAM due to the various ICs and PCB designs.
"According to JEDEC[1] the maximum recommended voltage is 1.9 volts and should be considered the absolute maximum when memory stability is an issue (such as in servers or other mission critical devices). In addition, JEDEC states that memory modules must withstand up to 2.3 volts before incurring permanent damage (although they may not actually function correctly at that level)."

This a reference from overclock.net but thats what it does and its main functioning.
