Hello,

I have a bad drive, so I'll have to reinstall OS. I currently have Win 7 pro OEM.
Since it MSFT always offering me to upgrade to Win 10 - should I do it, an if yes - first install 7 then upgrade to 10, or is there another way?

My computer is quite old -
CPU:
INTEL E8400 3 GHz
GPU:
1x AMD Sapphire 7850 HD
RAM:
8GB Gskill F2 6400CL
Motherboard:
GA-X48-DS4

Thank you

As said earlier, personal preference...:)

But, that "spying on you"...
1. Is already backported into Win 7
2. Can mostly be turned OFF easily, via Spybot Anti-Beacon - https://www.safer-networking.org/2015/spybot-anti-beacon-privacy-protection-tool/

1. Do you know your current Windows 7 license key?
If so, you do not have to install 7 first. You can can do a clean install of WIn 10, and activate with your existing Win 7 license.

2. The choice between 7 and 10 is very much just a personal preference.

Thank you(s).
I do have the key. But, 7 or 10? Clean Install as USAFRet offered or an upgrade like Rogue Leader offered?
I run pretty usual software - Office, Steam, I mostly play with this comp or surf the net.

If you're going to go to Win 10, you do not have to install 7 first.

Rogue Leader

It's a trap!

He is right I forgot about that, you can use your good Windows 7 key to install Win 10 fresh, may as well do that.

The choice between Windows 7 and Windows 10 is not straight forward.
Windows 7 is very compatible. 99.99% of your software will run on it.
Windows 7 is easier to trouble shoot (much easier to get in to safe mode, for example).
Windows 7 does not spy on you unless you screw up and get malware.

Windows 10 is a little faster (although in general your programs won't be).
Windows 10 has DX12, Windows 7 has dx11.1.
Windows 10 is newer and getting more 'love' from Microsoft.
Windows 10 WILL spy on you. It is in your EULA that Microsoft will collect info on you and your PC usage and has the right to use this in any way they find amusing including re-selling the info to others. It is almost impossible to completely stop this behavior. There are trouble shooting guides to reduce it, tools to reduce it, but you by and large you have to either be an IT pro (or have skills up at or close to this level) to run Win10 and keep your info as your own.

I have two PCs at home which I use inter-changably. One is Windows 10 Pro the other is Windows 7 Pro. From strictly using the PC point of view, I can't make a strong recommendation for or against either one. Both work as they should. Some software is a little flakey on the Win10 PC.
