Microcenter is running a special on the Asus small form factor ROG desktop. I can't get close to matching this price performance ratio in a custom build. Anyone able to show me an i7 with GTX 960 build for less?

http://www.microcenter.com/product/452278/ROG_G20_Desktop_Computer

Intel Core i7-4790 Processor 3.6GHz
Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit
8GB DDR3-1600 RAM
1TB 7,200RPM Hybrid Hard Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX960
SuperMulti DVD Drive
10/100/1000 Network
802.11ac Wireless
Bluetooth 4.0

$724.00 out the door after tax.

Actually with the in store deals with the cpu+mobo combo, you can get a custom build from microcenter probably cheaper and better than that. And in better I mean, a regular atx case for more options, a better efficiency psu and anything else I might have missed.

Love when MC does things like this. I got the Alienware Alpha for $300 (again, can't beat that price performance for a tiny HTPC)as an open box. The thing had never been fully unpacked or used. The ROG would replace the Alpha in the living room and the Alpha would move to the den.

With prebuilds like this, they aren't made to be upgraded easily. You would have to consider the small case and how that will effect cooling, graphics cards you can fit, and won't be able to upgrade to aftermarket CPU cooler.
The power supply is also rated at: 230 Watt+180 Watt. Which I'm not entirely sure about the +180w bit. But altogether that is only 410W. which leaves really no room to upgrade what so ever. They tend to use cheaper, lower quality boards and powersupplies for these builds, hence the low price and no room to upgrade.

If you custom build and get a decent sized case, the case will last forever in terms of upgrading, as you can fit several different sized motherboards inside, watercooling, multiple hard drives, better airflow etc.
You would also get a bigger PSU which would last for a long time depending on the wattage you buy and efficiency rating etc.

You won't get any better performance with a custom build at that price, but it will certainly be more future proof.

Size is a major consideration since it will be on the entertainment center. Even with MC combo pricing I am looking at atleast $350 before tax for the cpu/mobo. I did pricing earlier and came out way above $724 with a more bulky footprint.
