ATI Radeon HD 7800 Series with 3 monitors?

Hey guys!

My roommate has a Radeon 7800 series GPU, with x2 DVI, x1 HDMI, x1 DisplayPort. I am attempting to connect 3 monitors to the card. One uses DVI, one uses HDMI, and then she has a 3rd plugged into the DP, but its a DP to HDMI converter. No matter what I do, I can only get 2 monitors to display at once. It will show the 3rd monitor on the Screen Resolution window, but when i try to activate it, it says it cannot be saved.

My question is, is this because the monitor shes connecting to the DisplayPort not true DP, and converting to HDMI? I can indeed get any combination of the 2 out of 3 to work (DVI+HDMI, DVI+DP, HDMI+DP). Two of the monitors are regular PC monitors (2560x1440, 1920x1080), and the 3rd is an older HDTV (1366x768).

Also, as a side note, using the motherboard port is not an option as the motherboard only supports onboard graphics if the CPU does, and the CPU is 3350P which does not support onboard graphics either.

Thanks!

They do exist. The adapter you'd want to use would be called an active adapter. These are generally more expensive than passive adapters which basically just change the shape of the plug. Passive adapters are most common with DVI because DVI-I ports have the pins for both VGA and HDMI and DVI-I supports the signaling for both. Displayport also has pins for HDMI and VGA, so passive adapters can and are made, but again, these don't work for Eyefinity.

About the possibility... Although active adapters for Displayport exist, they do not always work because some monitors and/or graphics cards have compatibility problems. There is little documentation on whether or not a particular monitor and graphics card will work with a particular...

Have you tried seeing if all the monitors show in AMD Settings? I think 3 monitors needed connected to an AMD card need amd eyefinity. Also would be worth checking if your gpu actually supports 3 monitors

They do not show up in the catalyst control center. I've scouted around the internet and from what I've read, it should be able to support 3 as long as one of them is connected via the DP, which is why I was wondering if it would make a difference that she has a DP to HDMI converter, rather than a monitor/TV with an actual DP.

I do not know the specific model of her GPU, so I can look at that tonight, I just went off of what I found in the catalyst control center.

Depending on the type of adapter, a Displayport to HDMI adapter might not work for an Eyefinity setup. Some of them are not active adapters and the Dispalyport is merely passing an HDMI signal through. The graphics card can noly display two of these signals and DVI-D uses the same signal, so that means a max of two displays when the Displayport isn't used as a Displayport. Basically, the problem might be that the adapter is not converting from Displayport signaling to HDMI signaling.

If the Displayport to HDMI was an active adapter, then it would convert the signaling, so the graphics card would see the monitor as a Displayport-connected monitor.

Thank you for this clarification, and this was what I was leaning towards. Before I select your aforementioned comment as the solution, could you tell me how would I know which DP to HDMI would correctly send a signal as a DP? Or is this even possible(as in, would any converter throw the signal of whichever port is actually coming from the monitor)?

Thanks again!

Sorry, but I don't use them and can't say for sure what is the right one to have.

This is an example of an active adapter that has reviews stating it has worked for the purpose of Eyefinity, so it may work for you:
