Hi Peter and welcome to the community! :)

Do you hear any unusual sounds/noises coming from the drive? Do you have any data on it which you need to recover?

Basically what you could do is to try the drive with a different USB cable and a different computer if possible. Other than that you could post a screenshot of what you see in Disk Management, by uploading it somewhere and posting the link (imgur.com should do the job). Here's how to open DM: How to access Disk Management in Windows to manage hard drives.

If you have no data to recover, you could also try to test the drive with its manufacturer's diagnostic tool, or a 3rd party one if the manufacturer doesn't offer such a tool -...

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

I have a Samsung TV too. Did you use the correct USB slot on the TV? Or remove it while it was making a recording? Mine has a set HDD recording slot which is the only one that can pick up a drive.

Note that if you do record onto it with the TV, the programs are locked from playing on a PC or other TV, I have even tried a different tv the same model to no effect.

yes i tried it in all of them, the first time was fine, but the next day when i tried it again its like the tv erased the whole drive. now it doesnt register with the tv or my comp. i just found it in disk management but i went back to see if my computer picked it up, but it didnt, ill keep trying. thanks

That's good news. I've asked for a screenshot (this is basically a picture of what you see on your screen) as it matters what it says about the drive in Disk Management. Here's how to make a screenshot - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/take-screen-capture-print-screen#take-screen-capture-print-screen=windows-7, please scratch any personal info you may have on the screen by using MS Paint. Here's how to post one in the forum: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2176231/guide-posting-screenshot-forum.html.
