Hi guys,

My previous build was this:

Processor (CPU): Intel® Core™i5 Quad Core Processor i5-4570 (3.2GHz) 6MB Cache
Motherboard : ASUS® H81M-E: Micro-ATX, LG1150, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs
Memory (RAM): 8GB KINGSTON DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card 2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 650Ti BOOST- 2 x DVI, HDMI, - 3D Vision Ready

Power Unit: Corsair 450W

I have, as the title mentions, recently purchased a GTX 970 Strix having installed it myself and worked on the drivers it still has the problem of crashing when tabbing out of games or about five minutes into games. The computer freezes and the game shuts down.

If I reconnect my old card the 650 TI boost everything runs fine. I only upgraded to be able to stream Dota 2 as at the moment my card does not have the capabilities. I have tried updating the drivers, deleting and reinstalling drivers etc and nothing seems to be working at the moment.

The one thing I have not been able to do is update the BIOS as Asus make it extremely painful to do so. Does anyone have any idea what the problem will be?

Thanks,
Ringo

That's a Tier 4 PSU on Tom's Hardware's PSU Tier List (Link in signature). Most likely it's the cause of the trouble. How much are you willing to spend? And do you care about asthetics inside the PC?

I'm running the EVGA 550W G2, which is a top of the line Tier 1 PSU. It's a bit expensive right now though ($79), so the 550W GS is fine:

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA GS 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($69.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $69.99

The differences between the G2 and GS are minor. The G2 is built by...

The fact that your 650 Ti (Which is far less power hungry than the 970) works while the 970 crashed when under load points to a PSU overload. Exactly what Cosair PSU do you have? Even a high quality 450W PSU is insufficient for the 970 (A 970 requires at least a 550W PSU); Corsair's lower range CS and CX PSUs are far from high quality.

It's the 450W VS Series. What PSU do you recommend (preferably reasonably cheap)?

Thanks,
Ollie

The differences between the G2 and GS are minor. The G2 is built by Super Flower based on their Leadex Gold platform and comes with a 7 year warranty, while the GS is made by Seasonic, based on a new platform and comes with a 5 year warranty. The GS is Tier 1 aswell, and quality-wise both are nearly identical. If you nitpick the G2 is better, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the GS.
