I know this has been asked a million times so if someone could tell me again or just link me to a page that lists the answer I'd appreciate it.

Just put together my i6-6700k, Maximus hero Alpha and noctua cooler. I've never been able to monitor cup temp before so Im wondering what is normal? and what temp should make me worried that my cooler isn't doing its job? or there is a break down somewhere?

many thanks

You probably mean i5-2600k. Answer would depend on how hard you are pushing it, cooling headroom/config for your enclosure and the particular noctua cooler you are using.

This is a rough estimate off the top of my head until someone comes by with the time to google you more precise figures for your setup, you can expect 20-30 deg C while idle and 50-60 deg C while under heavy load.

i7 6700K's throttling temperature is 100c. Absolute maximum temperature before immediate shutdown (to prevent damage) I believe is 130c. It's generally recommended that, as you start increasing voltage and clockspeed above stock, you want to be farther away from 100c, because it's a combination of heat and voltage that degrades CPUs over time.

Experience has shown that modern CPUs will run longer than they're useful, even when they're up near throttle temperature.

Intel rates their mobile CPUs by their maximum core temperature, which is 100c for Skylake. They rate their desktop CPUs with "Tcase", which (as I understand it) is the temperature of the surface of the heatspreader. There is no temperature sensor in the heatspreader though, only the cores, and since desktop CPUs are the same silicon as mobile, it's safe to assume the same maximum core temperature applies.

Most would agree that 80c or less is a healthy safety margin.
