I want to install a SSD with my OS. I don't want to clone my whole HDD and prefer a clean OS install.

As that goes, I plan to install the OS onto the SSD then once installed switch the boot order in the
Bios so that it selects the SSD as my boot drive in slot 1.

But keep all of my other files (Games,Pictures, and videos) on my HDD

I also plan putting google chroome in my SSD and other programs

SSD -- Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Thank you!

Solution

1. Copy everything you want off the current drive to the external
2. Disconnect everything except the new SSD
3. Install the OS
4. Once it is verified working from the SSD, then reconnect the old HDD
5. Now you wipe the old drive
6. Copy back what you need off the external

That will mostly not work.
You really need a 3rd drive (even if only temporarily), to put your games (only if Steam or Origin), pics, videos, docs.
Then you completely wipe the old HDD, and move stuff back.

Basically, you need somewhere else to put things while you wipe the old drive.

If you already have an external, that is by far the best way to do it.
