I just built my first pc and it's already giving me headaches :(

Specs of my build:
Cpu _ AMD Athlon X4 860K Black Edition
Cooler _ Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Mobo _ Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-D3HP Micro ATX
Gpu _ EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB SSC GAMING ACX 2.0+ Whisper Silent Cooling
Ram _ Kingston HyperX Fury (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
Psu _ EVGA 500 W1 80+, 500W
HHD _ Seagate 1TB Desktop HDD SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache
SSD _ ADATA USA Premier SP550 120GB

*The 860K is OC'd at 4.2MHz (1.332V)

I tried to OC the GTX 960 because I get really low fps in games and it fluctuates like craazyy. For example (80-160 fps, medium settings in CSGO). And sometimes the frames drop and freezes in game.
So, this GTX 960 would not overclock. Doesn't matter which software I use, it stays at it's factory clock.

I think I got a faulty gpu. So my question is should I just return this and get some other gpu that works great with X4 860k? If so, which one would it be? or should I just try to get a replacement for the same gtx 960?

Thanks :)

Solution
in your first / all screen shot it shows it up to 1278 and the ssc is 1279 / 1342 so that seems right now you know there 2 bios on that card ?? one is standard and one is performance switch to performance mode and see if it will then boot to closer to the 1342 +

•Base Clock: 1279 MHZ
•Boost Clock: 1342 MHz

http://www.evga.com/products/Specs/GPU.aspx?pn=dfd1eee3-9910-4da3-ac8b-ca9ce52b7b4f

looks normal to me ??

you got all that overclocking going on so it maybe a bad profile or oc ?? and tis causeing throttling of the cpu? did you check any of that out ?

be sure you register that card at evga [you got 30 days] in case you do decide to rma if you feel like so... then your a member and you could do this...

CPU OC is stable I stress tested it on maximum load for 7+ hours. Let's just assume that my cpu is holding back the potential GTX 960 has. That means overclocking on gpu is impossible ?
And yes the little switch doesn't really do anything to the performance.
I'm gonna run the heaven benchmark right now on stock options and response back
thanks for helping btw i really appreciate it :)

try gpu-z and run its logging to record a log maybe see something from that ?? like if its hitting the full 1342 at any time ??

'' That means overclocking on gpu is impossible '' should be but like I said try over at evga forums and get there fanboys on it as well they may see or know something I don't ...

if that gray bar in PrecisionX is running up to that 1278 I'd think that is about right but I never used PrecisionX ...

I looked a a u-tube vid on it and it seemed like that's what it shows to do ,so???

also I guess there still issue with NVidia drivers and win-10 if your using that as well ???

look this over

from comments

bro I have the same specs and only get around 100 fps

bro i have the same gpu and cpu but ive got only around 80-160 .. on a same map too

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwFJYjc7dA0

this guy seems to only get like 130fps ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4AeP80scX0

about the same here as well

wow so seems like the gpu is not just as good then

Actually I take that back. Maybe the 860k is way too weak for gtx 960. But the only thing i'm not understanding now is the overclocking part.

I'm not giving oc help because if I tell somthiong and you do it and something goes wrong or what ever ?? so I just don't give oc advice ...sorry

register your card at evga and post on there forums with all there evga experts -

looking over all that like I posted its all over the place but I wonder if them guys who claim them way higher fps are telling the whole truth ?

face it you can see the u-tube vids with a higher end i5 and a 960 does a lot better job

when you look at them you do see the 200fps ball park?

stronger chip but weaker card ??? you scored better over all but look at the min. fps hit you take [8.1fps] see that matbe where the cpu came into play cause you got the stronger card over me [theory]

I figured and you're right!! It's bottleneck...
It's not OCing because my cpu is limiting the card from doing so.

When I lower down the graphics quality to the lowest in games, it only makes sense that I get more fps but it drops dramasticlly instead. which simply means bottleneck, if i'm not mistaken.

I wonder if i can still return my cpu since I've used it for about a week already

cant say depends on the store you bought it froms return policy and how they work it out with you ? you should have 30 days at least ? each part has its own guide lines

heres neweggs on that cpu from them

I got it on amazon. I don't actually know what to do tho. I don't know any decent FM2/FM2+ socket processor to pair it with gtx 960. I think I should just keep this and upgrade to intel later down the road ?

Sorry for this reply being so late. I swear I just have one more concern and won't annoy you anymore.
I just found out that I am still able to return my cpu and mobo

So.........

I found an i5-3570k for $135

i3-6100 for $109.99 with bundle savings (mobo discounts) at Micro center
http://i3-6100

and
fx-8320 for $129.99 with bundle savings (mobo discounts) on Micro center
http://fx-8320

I have a tight budget
i5 3570k is of course the best option but it's impossible to find a decent price/performance mobo to pair it with since I can only use MicroATX mobos.
i3 6100 can't be overclocked so should I just stick to AMD and get fx-8320? But I don't really wanna rely on AMD anymore :(

if me I would do a nice haswell build that ive bridge is not worth it . the chip is cheap but finding a nice board maybe the issue as you done seen ??

amd no point buying the past today as well looking at all the amd threads it maybe getting there time is up ??

I have to dislike you to recommend a issue full skylake then maybe trapped in to that crap junk issue full windows 10 with it ?

13,433 reads ??

between 10 and skylake you got to be a glutton for punishment in my opinion ... lol.... and must not like things working well ??

I'm running a z87 and a 4670 non k and happy with it

if you want to oc look at this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117372

or a nice xeon ??

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117316

with something like this maybe ?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157500

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157501

if me I would build a nice haswell before I would do a skylake we know haswell is tried and true and works well and not so proprietary as skylake

you can still load up win-7 with out the issues you see trying to do that on a skylake

I don't know your price point or budget you got to play with for this ??

I wish I could afford that right now lol
My budget is around 150 for both cpu and mobo. Reason why I got the 860k in the first place
Thought I mentioned that I'm currently running Windows 10
I guess I'm inevitably a glutton for punishment :pfff:

ya they win -10 and how NVidia is with it that maybe part of your original issue ?? NVidia been having a tough time with 10 ?

did you try to test the card in another computer to see if its the same ??

I don't know what your going to do with just 150 bucks for a board ''and'' a chip ?

for some reason I cant look at your microcenter links ?

maybe that amd is not so bad after all ??

what does microcenter offer on what I listed ?? anything close ?

link me your stuff from above like this

[this don't look bad at all ]

see how crazy microcenter is they got that asrock 990fx killer board in what you gave me for bundle 104 bucks but in the link I gave you is 59 after rebate ? [bundled with the 8320e]

There's no items in your cart lol
So should I just go with 8320E ?
Oh but .... I just wanna kill myself now... i can't have an atx board. I'm gonna have to get a new case otherwise

m-atx ? ok man I don't know that 150 limit is a killer that's the price of a good board let me look

it s hard to shop cause I know what I need and its for board and chip to start a plan is 350$ with out looking at anything yet ..

like I would not go lower then a top i5 or less then a nice z board [but that's just me ]

I don't know anything on a i3 at all cause there of no intrest to me [ sorry] so I'm winging it as well trying to help

also when I choose the 8320 bundles it gives me the 8320e with them ???

I got it right now

anyway I like that asrock board for that 59$ after rebate bundle but I guess weather the 8320 is better over the 8320e ?

let me look over the newegg reviews on them chips

like from here the 'E'' looks good at that 95w where the 8220 is a 125w so less power and heat ??

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-FX-8320E-vs-AMD-FX-8320

http://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-amd_fx_8320-225-vs-amd_fx_8320e-443

not as good here but it is slightly clocked less then the 8320 , so ??

I really appreciate your help. I hope I'm not giving you a really hard time.
Worst case scenario, I'm just gonna get a new case.

Yes, 8320e is slightly better.

umm, I think 8320e would be better at overclocking since it has less TDP ?
