Hey guys,

As the title states, I'd like to upgrade my build, but can only really manage to afford one pricey component, so I'd like to know which would give me the best performance increase. I bought this rig second hand so the parts are quite old.

Build:
FX-8120 8-Core CPU @4.0Ghz (Stock 3.1Ghz)
Powercolor HD 7970
Corsair Vengeance 4GB RAM @ 1600MHz
Asus m5a78 LM-LX Mobo
Coolermaster 1000W SilentPro PSU (Yes, I know it's overkill. As I said, this was bought second hand)
Seagate Barracuda 1tb HDD @7200Rpm
Thermaltake Armor A60 Chassis
Windows 8.1

I am definitely planning on getting another 8GB of RAM, so I already know that much. I'm an animation student and gamer, so I tend to use Adobe CS6 (Photoshop, AfterEffects, Illustrator) a hell of a lot. I play games like fallout 4 (High-Very high @ 45 Fps avg.), and the Witcher III (High @ 45 Fps avg.). I also tend to play MMO's like Guild Wars 2 quite a lot as well. So it all boils down to which components should I consider to upgrade to get the best performance increase in the aforementioned programs/games. I'm looking at the Powercolor R9 390 (Retails for around R5,400 in South Africa) for a GPU upgrade, and possibly an FX-6300 for a CPU upgrade, as I've read that the Bulldozer architecture is pretty garbage, and getting the FX-6300 may be a (less expensive) upgrade. For mobo, probably the Asus M5A97 LE R2. But like I said, for now i can pretty much only afford either a new gpu or a new cpu. Also, if I upgrade to the 390, will I experience any bottlenecks with the 8120?

Thanks in advance.
P.s I'm new to this forum so sorry if this wasn't posted in the right place.
Cheers

Nope, you don't want to replace 8120 with 6300 for sure. What you want is something like 8350 but then again it wouldn't be much of an upgrade if you have a golden 8120 processors. The real thing would be buying much better motherboard for overclock and a cooler like Noctua NH-D14

These are good/best amd motherboards with which you can overclock your cpu:

Mid-range:

- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 Make sure it's latest revision!

- Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0

- MSI 990FXA-GD65V2

- ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer

High-end:

- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5

- MSI 990FXA-GD80V2

- Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0

- ASRock 990FX Extreme9

Ultimate:

- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7

- Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z

Going from a FX 8120 to a FX 6300 would be a downgrade. I wouldn't even bother trying to update the processor -- it's decent enough as is. I would just upgrade the RAM. You can't mix 8GiB stick of RAM with 4GiB stick which you already have. You have to buy a completely new set.

Thanks a lot for your responses guys, i really appreciate it. Thanks for the suggestions too! I'll keep them in mind. What about the GPU? Would I be good with an R9 390?
