Windows XP stuck in reboot loop after April 2016 security updates

I still maintain a handful of older desktop computers that dual boot Windows 7 and Windows XP because there is software installed on the XP partitions that the vendor won't upgrade without getting paid serious $$$. There are 4 identical computers all purchased around 2009.
After the April 2016 security updates when booting into XP, 2 of these machines will spontaneously freeze up and reboot after 1 to 2 min, regardless if I log on or not. The other 2 havn't had their April security updates installed yet (there are 7 waiting to be downloaded) and these machines don't exhibit this behavior. All 4 are running just fine when booting into Windows 7.
It's a bit of a pickle as I can't log on long enough to diagnose or roll back the upgrades.
Any advice (other than the obvious answer to upgrade the hardware and pay for the software a second time)?

What about the last recovery point you set before the security updates? start in secure mode and go back.
Next check out if your XP-Program run under win7 in compatible mode WinXP-SP3.
