i7-6500U - 2.5 GHz base (3.1 GHz Turbo), HD Graphics 520 - $1249
i7-6560U - 2.2 GHz base (3.2 GHz Turbo), Iris Graphics 540 - $1399

I am a Computer Science student and am looking for a good Ultrabook. The new XPS 13 is probably the one I want to get, but I'm confused between the two i7s, one of which has a lower base frequency but higher turbo frequency with iris graphics, while the other has faster base frequency but lower turbo frequency with HD graphics. The price difference being of $150.

Which one should I get?

Yes, and it is pretty obvious the iris 540 significantly performs better. I already know which processor is better, what I am asking is - as a programmer does the 540 really matter to me, and is the 0.3 GHz slower base frequency and 0.1 GHz faster turbo frequency enough to justify the $150 dollar hike?

I definitely am looking for performance per dollar here from a programmer point of view.

VERY high level, boiled-down answer...
■ IF you are going to do more gaming than video/Netflix/YouTube watching, then get the i7-6500U.
■ IF you are going to watch more videos, then go with the i7-6560U.

  • ■ The 6500U has double the TMUs, texture rate, render output units, and pixel rates but the 6560U has 2x the shading processors and performance.
    ■ Keep in mind we are talking LIMITED gaming at Low to Medium resolution, at best.
    ■ Both chips are NOT nearly gamer-centric.
Reasons to consider the extra $150 for the i7-6560U:

  • ■ You watch more videos/movies/Netflix, where shading and smoothness are much more noticable and relevant than TMUs and pixel rate, etc.
    ■ Your Ultrabook is using a 4K screen or you are going to display to a 4K external screen, or multiple screens simultaneously (up to 3); graphics/videos will be smoother than with the 6500U
    ■ You play games and can deal with the low/med resolution frame-rate, to begin with, then the graphics will be smoother due to better overall shading than even double the TMUs, pixel rate, etc. of the 6500U.
They are very close in performance, but it comes down to what you will use the Ultrabook for, and whether you have a 4K display and/or need/want smoother video.
IF video is not as important and you go with a HD screen at 1980x1080 vs. a 4K screen, I would save the $150 and get the 6500U.
