Hi guys my motherboard is a msi gaming 5 and can run ram of up 32gb at 1866mhzt and higher. My current Ram is over a few years old and is at 1333mhzt. I want to purchase 16gb Hyper X Fury Ram at 1866mhzt with a xmp profile, as the current ram i have is not xmp supported and just runs at 1333mhzt at stock.

My issue is, My cpu (Intel i5 4690k OC at 4.1ghzt) states max ram frequency is 1600mhzt (http://ark.intel.com/products/80811/Intel-Core-i5-4690K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz) but my motherboard can have ram installed with the max frequency of 2400mhzt. I would like to purchase the 16gb 1866mhzt ram but will the speed of the ram be determined by the cpu or the motherboard as I did google and found various conflicting statements from this forum and many others. Such statements I found are the cpu will lower the speed to 1600mhz and i will need to use the xmp profile or manually OC the ram, or I need a K series cpu and the max speed the ram is set at will run automatically via xmp or the ram needs to be manually OC through the bios, or the cpu will run the ram at 1600mhzt and i have to manually edit the frequency and timings and keep testing until stable or i need a newer cpu supporting 1866mhz ram.

I just want to know before i spend any money, how will buying 1866mhzt ram run on my systame since my motherboard says this speed is fine, but my cpu says max is 1600mhzt on the intel website. And since I have come across many conflicting statments Just want a solid answer.

Thank you

The RAM...

You'll be able to set the XMP to whatever the frequency the motherboard and CPU supports. I know Intel states max 1600MHz, but you can overclock the CPU, the RAM, set the profiles correctly...if your motherboard supports 2400MHz, you should be able to run it at that frequency.

My Cpu supports 1600mhzt ram and my Mobo supports up to max 2400mhzt so how will i be able to run 1866mhzt? My cpu OC is 4.1ghzt and the stock of this cpu is 3.5ghzt. Since my cpu is at 4.1ghzt OC how will that work on 1866mhzt ram? would i need to manually set the oc on my ram, or since the ram has xmp will it determine the speed of the ram frequency automatacially based on my oc on my cpu? and set the correct speeds on the ram?

Thanks

The RAM speeds after a certain number appear as unsupported because it's already "overclocking territory", but it will work. Especially since you've already overclocked your CPU. You may wantto install the RAM and see at what frequency it defaults. If it defaults at 1600MHz, enter the BIOS, set the XMP Aat whatever thefrequency the RAM is designed to run (2400MHz in your case), and after a restart it should work. If not, manually overclock the RAM in the BIOS setting the desired frequency and the particular latency configuration that's listed on your RAM modules /package.

I dont think i will need to use XMP as the ram i stated is 1866mhzt from Hyper x and is plug and play which does not use XMP. So based on ur info in my mobo can support the speed which it can it should run at these speeds. As the ram is clocked at that speed default.

Thank you

Actually there is plug and play, HYPER X Fury ram is PNP (PLUG AND PLAY) http://www.hyperxgaming.com/us/memory/fury

You dont need xmp and nor do u need to overclock this ram. AS LONG AS THE MOBO SUPPORTS the speed and the ram is compatible it will by default run at that speed. I am very suprised you as a expert are not aware of this, the ram sticks are by default clocked at that speed, so as long as your mobo supports the speed your good to go.

The memory controller is the one that sets speed based on what it reads off the ram which has multiple jedec profiles besides xmp. Ram is not default clocked to any speed when the speed is the bus speed not the ram itself. It will not default to an oc speed on most mobos. Yes it can default to 1866 on a mobo that has a stock speed of 1866 but haswell default is 1600. Marketing can call it plug and play all they want but it doesn't change the fact that all modern ram runs this way.

Ah ok thank you for the info. Ur awesome
