I have a choice of a new thermaltake toughpower 750w or a XFX XTR 550w. Both are 80 gold and theyre both the same price. Which would you opt for?

Solution
What is the exact model number of the Thermaltake unit? There are many Thermaltake Toughpower editions, and the XFX XTR 550w is a pretty damn good unit so it would need to be one of the better Toughpower models OR there would need to be a case for why you need more than 550w to make it a good choice. The Toughpower DPS for example, is a tier one unit. The Toughpower Gold 1200w or XT however, are mediocre tier three units. Exact model number is what determines whether it's a good unit or not. Within any given series there can be and usually are, examples of both.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153198 for the thermaltake

I fully agree with this comment, because now, two years later, there are still no major reviews of that unit which means Thermaltake knows it has platform issues and doesn't want it to harm sales of those units. PSU companies tend to send out units they know are excellent and shy away from sending out review units on their lower quality models.

Since it uses the exact same CWT platform as this unit, which scored a measly 8.6 on the JonnyGuru review, I'd say it's a dud and I'd avoid it and go with the XFX. These all use the same platform.

What is the model of the GPU card you're running or planning to run as well as the rest of the core system specs?

I have a radion r9 270x. Power consumptions about 400w. I have a 550w PSU currently, just want to switch to a modular model instead. Was gonna go with the xfx, but just wanted to check and see if that thermaltake was worth considering for the extra wattage.

If you want a higher capacity unit that's better than either of those, and is both higher capacity and semi-modular like the Toughpower, I'd go with this. This is probably the best quality unit with the best warranty for under 80 dollars that's on the market.
