Hello. For a while now (a year at least) my external hard drive hasn't been working. When I plug it's power cord into the power pack and connect it to the drive the blue light that used to flash doesn't turn on, and I can't hear the drive itself whirring either. I can also recall that even when it did work I had the problem that so many others have with their computers not recognising the drive in the My computer folder, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I really really really don't want to conclude that it's just dead and nothing can be done so I'm submitting this question here in hopes that there are options available.

Thanks in advance!

Solution
The most common test in this situation is to remove the drive from the case and attach it directly to the motherboard, if you have a tower system, or to a USB-to-SATA or IDE cable. The idea is to figure out if the problem is in the drive or in the enclosure. If it works, the problem was the enclosure and you have your dATA.
