I currently have the 5960X w/dual 980's. In general, how long will this system last? I play games like COD / BF4 -

I really don't do anything else as this rig was a free upgrade due to some system issues from my previous build. I have had it over a year and was wondering how long before I need to upgrade... Sorry if this seems like a noob question (as it is), but I just need a basic understanding of what I have.

Thanks!

well that CPU, if you overclock it, will last for the foreseeable future. if you can get it above 4.0 GHZ it will server your needs for an easy 5 years unless some radically new faster CPU pops up. It could be even longer. as for the dual 980s, if you ever get into hardcore 4K gaming they might start to fall behind a bit. but even then at 1440p those are pretty much unstoppable one again for the foreseeable future. unless you want 4K at the fastest FPS around, you should not need to upgrade that thing for a good three to four years. and that is to stay near the front of the pack. that is a great system.

Thanks for the quick response Robert! I think the next thing I will get will be a 144 monitor (I currently have a 60hz monitor) I heard the 144 looks better?

A new generation of video cards is about to be released that should be a lot faster than current cards. It's not exactly going to make 980's obsolete, but video cards tend to need upgrading/replacement much more frequently than CPUs do.

Given how the advancement in CPU speed has been slowing, I wouldn't be surprised if that CPU were useful for 6-8 years, or more, baring (as Robert Cook suggested) some radical and unpredictable change in computer hardware.

Yes that seems it could be. pascal has some great promise, Also AMD might have something cooking to. certainly worth waiting for as your current dual 980s is pretty much the best.
