So with all the buzz now around the much anticipated cards, primarily Nvidia atm.. what is a reasonable guestimate of how far we could possibly see cards like 980 ti/980 and the 970's fall in price and if AMD responds with their own for the fury lines or 390x's?

Because at a most reasonable budget of $200-$300 and the will-power of restraint on ones own purchasing desire i think make for a fairly well worth decision to invest in the newer architecture cards.

just wondering everyone elses opinions on the matter?

There's always buzz about the next big thing .... even if it isn't a big thing cause media needs to sell their product.. And I don't mean the hardware, i mean you clicking the links and bringing in those add dollars.

Expect to see the best deals offered at the top of the line. Nvidia stuck the 780 Ti on the shelf for 6 months cause it made no sense to release it. It was widely rumored that when nvidia realized the performance of the 770 had no competition, the 780 went on the shelf and the 770 was released as the 780. The original 780 was then later released as the 780 Ti. when the latter came out, the 780 dropped in price by $150.

I don't think we'll see such huge drops this time around or that we will even see the 980's...

I don't think we'll see such huge drops this time around or that we will even see the 980's replacement being a "place holder". When the 980 Ti dropped with it's 30+% overclock ability, it kinda made the 980 a red headed stepchild. For the small performance increase from the 970 to the 980, it was fairly east to justify the jump to the 980 Ti and 980 sales tanked. Nvidia purposely nerfed the 970's performance by dropping the throttling point to 80C (18C below max temp) ... the 980 and 980 Ti don't throttle till 85C. As things tuned out, the 970 outsold all other 9xx series combine and also all AMD 2xx and 3xx series combined.

So while of course nVidia would like to repeat the success of the 970 (which as of February IIRC was installed on more gaming systems than any other card hitting steam servers (including Intel HD), ya gotta think that would rather selll more of the x80 series as the profit margin is better.... so i think we'll see a smaller price differential between the x80 and x70.

As for when to buy, I always recommend avoiding the 1st reference card releases and waiting for the non-reference cards. So when the reference cards are released, the 9xx series w/ discounts will be very attractive purchases. Then, once the tweaked non reference cards come out, those reference cards will look a bit less rosy.

The 1070 is what most people are waiting for only and needs to be as fast or faster than a 980 but not be as fast as 980ti and will probably launch at $400 is my guess with an planned price drop to be as late as possible.

1080 is preventing some potential 980ti sales but not a lot as a quick sale of 980ti will temp most back.

The 970 was significantly faster (15% @ 1080p) than the 780 even after nVidia intentionally nerfed its performance.

My guess is that we will see a repeat of the 9xx scenario where the release of the 1080 Ti will result in the 1070 and 1080 Ti as the only relevant cards. As with the 7xx series where the price of the 780 dropped by $150+ when the 780 Ti came out, we saw the 980 Ti put a big hit on the 980's price. I expect the same with the 1xxx series.
