understanding single-core performance - when / how / which? upgrading CPU

I am finally getting rid of my old CPU, the i7-990x. Mainly because my mobo's pins fell out, and I think it's time to upgrade. I must admit I did many great projects with this processor, mainly editing and coloring in after effects. I also had a triple channel setup of DDR3 1600 24gb.

So my questions are, how do I even know what to get next? My last purchase I just went with the whim that whatever was the most expensive and ''overclocking'' was the ''right'' thing to do. I learned years later that by me not even overclocking my i7-990x I just wasted money.

I am looking at CPU Boss comparisons and I see that in some benchmarks there are single core performances differences, with the i5-4460 beating it. I plan still use my PCI 3.0 x 16 GTX 660 for now. So my new or used mobo should have that PCIe 3.0 setting. Also, I have 6 dimms of 4gb 1600 DDR3 in which I can sell or still used. I noticed however that triple channel isn't around anymore.

Most of my work ONLY involves realtime scrubbing and playback of Full and 4K files, usually RAW files too. So there's a lot of pausing and playing in realtime in my editing program. What about rendering power? Is there any theory that an i5 new or used can be at the same level as my old i7-990x?

Best regards. I plan to share my new build soon. I need your help.

Sell your old ram. Maybe you can also sell the motherboard in pc repair shop.

500 bucks. I will sell my i7-990x with the Intel cooler. I can probably get 300 usd for it on ebay. Should I keep the DDR3-1600 24gb set and use 4 of them on a dual channel board and an older gen mobo? Or just limit myself to a DDR4 8GB rig, mobo, processor for around 500 bucks? Possible?

Oh - you mean cpu socket pins. Interesting, how did you manage to make them fall out?

For solution to your problem - easiest and cheapest would be just getting a new LGA1366 mobo.
But if you have made decision about definite upgrade, then appropriate would be transition to LGA2011-v3 system:
Core i7-5820K
X99 LGA2011-3 motherboard
DDR4 RAM
