With 550ti and even after u upgrade ur gpu to say gtx 950 or 960 level, u r not gonna play on more than 1080p resolution, are you?
And when we talk bout gaming, the vram of gpu is lot more important than the system ram...
so 8 gigs of ram is plenty, u should definately go with storage... i strongly recommend to get a 60 gb or 120 gb ssd for system drive i.e. "C" drive for os and programs installation, if possible in ur budget and then add the larger capacity hdd for other storage...
and when u get urself a new gpu then at least get one with 2 gb of gddr5 vram like the gtx 950 or gtx 960 or radeon r9 380, wil b useful for upcoming future games... the nvidia gtx 700 and 900 series gpus dnt perform as good as radeon r9 200 and r9 300...

Please provide examples of "most games using 8GB" because i have never ever even seen anywhere close to 8GB of ram used during gaming.

How much money do you have to spend I would say upgrade the GPU if you can heck I think you get a GT 950 (maybe a reach for a 960) for under $140 (in the us) Just going to a new GPU with 2GB of memory would probably help you out with gaming a lot better than a new HD or for sure 8GB of system memory.

I'd like too see this too. I had this discussion with a mod a few weeks ago. He kept saying "depending on the game" but couldnt name any games or shows any articles that shows anywhere near that being used for the while system while gaming.

I've never seen anywhere close to that while gaming Using after burner to monitor and having skype, steam, chrome tabs, different software for different brand keyboards and mice running, not the mention the game im playing and other system resources; i've never seen more than the low 5 gigs tot system use while playing.
