I was given a not working dell optiplex 390. The previous owner's 'friend' tried to fix it and might have moved some jumpers. Reading the manual and searching dell site I cant determine were the jumpers should be. I want to know that they are in the proper positions. Is this info available? I found this (http://www.dell.com/support/Article/us/en/6099/SLN284985), but section two totally confuses me. It sounds like the jumper is being moved from the PSWD connector to the RTCRST connector, without saying which of the 3 pins to connect. However, the picture below shows both connectors having jumpers. Note that I already reset the bios by removing the battery. So, that is not what Im trying to do here.

tks,

paul

based on the instructions on that page, there is no need to have a jumper on point 2.
As to where the "normal" positioning is, said normal/reset positioning for each jumper is on the board. The board will 99.9% likely also have a small marking as to which pin of the 3 is 1st.
Provided of course that the image of the board on link was for the computer in question.

edit: Based on searches online, I think that the jumper positions shown in the link are the default ones. Simply because all images I can find have them in same position.
So.. the jumper 2 (in link image) might be optional as implied by the directions. If all else fails, you would need to find extra jumper and try with that.

image is same my board. my board no marking which is pin 1, 2, or 3. If default is to have jumper on both connectors, when why/how do I move it from the PSWD to the CMOS connector as stated step 2 at that dell link? My board does have jumpers on both, but that might not be how the computer left the factory. Maybe this is why Im having issues with this computer, cuz this cmos jumper should not be there???

Well, while this is a bit late reply, the position shown on image (the two pins towards bottom of image) is the "default" positioning of said jumper.
Also since directions tell you to move it, it is quite likely that the password clearing jumper (shown as jumper 2 in that image) is not needed on default position.
So jumper should be positioned as shown in image, jumper 1, for it to be at default position.

maybe, however, this is NOT what the steps in that link say.
