Hi all- a year ago, when I was upgrading my system, I went with a DD4 system. Based on recommendations here and other places, and my budget, I went with a smaller total RAM but did get 4 matching units.

I've got 4 more empty memory slots, and a desire to increase my RAM. What are the benefits and risks of going with one of the recent sales on something like 2x 8GB instead of filling in the remaining 4 slots with a 4x RAM set? Basically, will it do anything harmful to the performance of the current chips, or are the two sets of 4x slots treated independently by the system?

Similarly, do the timing on the chips in the second 4x slots have to match the existing 4x chips in the first set of slots? Or can I use anything the MB is rated for?

I don't game, this is all to support having a number of VMs open at the same time.

Thank you!

Solution
Might be a good idea. Thing is, DRAM is not looked seperately or even by channel, the MC see it all together and it all has to play togehter

Well, there's no way I can afford an 8x kit, so it sounds like I'm stuck with what I have, or I can buy additional sticks and have no way to assess the risk of failure... I had hoped that the memory controller was smart enough to treat each set of 4 slots at least somewhat separately :-(

...or, I wait until a 2x kit that is larger than my 4x kit is within my price range, and just switch to 2x memory... looks like 32GB is down to $100, so maybe I'll wait a few more months and make the switch
