How to tell if SLI setup is working properly

Hi all,

I just got my 980 2 way SLI setup up and running this afternoon. While I had my computer apart I also went ahead and put in 3 additional case fans that I hooked up to the Mobo and all of the components appear to be working great. Firestrike score almost doubled, I was very happy.

I crank up fallout 4 and max out every setting. at my main settlement I'm getting 90-100fps at 1440p, so I'm very happy. When I went to various locations however, i notice frame rates dipping into the 40s and staying there, sometimes going as low as 30s and not getting much over 60. Now I'm not so happy. There doesnt seem to be anything in particular that sets it off, but it certainly happens in combat when a lot of stuff is flying around the screen, explosions, smoke, rain, etc.

I'm looking at GUPZ and on either card it looks like the gpu load is 50-70% at any given time. My question is - could there be something not quite working right and how would I figure it out?

I get it that SLI is not going to operate flawlessly in every game - I expect that, and I also understand that not every game is going to scale the same. But, this being my first experience with SLI I dont want to just accept the fact that this is as good as it gets if there's something I need to diagnose. I thought may my PUS - the power supply is EVGA supernova 750w B2, I looked at the recommendations on what kind of PSU 2 of these things would require and 750 was the recommended for 2 way SLI so that's what I went with.

Again, there may be no problem at all, and FA4 may just be one of those games that doesn't get a huge improvement from SLI. I just want to make sure. The rest of my specs are in my sig for reference. I tried to make sure this rig will be enough to last me for several years without any major upgrades.

Thanks for the help!

After much messing around with the settings I finally decided to see if it was maybe just the Precision X in game display that was throwing me off - the placebo effect, if you will - and turned it off. set it back to ultra, fired it up, and went to town. it was fabulous, I dont know if maybe FA4 doesn't like that program, but to me it seemed so much better. Maybe it was because I just wasn't looking at the FPS constantly.
