New Home Network

We are moving into my grandparents old farmhouse and need to set up a home network. We have gutted nearly the entire thing (everything but kitchen) so we could update the electrical, add insulation, etc. Fiber Optic is already set up to the house but no Ethernet is ran inside yet.

My first question is concerning router and switch placement. Normally our home network consisted of a single router with just a couple things hooked up to it, namely an Xbox and smart tv. This is because our main incoming internet jack is right next to the tv in our current house. While i like this set up, we would like to run ethernet to multiple rooms now so we don't have to cut into drywall later. From what I understand, you want the network set up as follows: Modem-router-switch. Since the house is gutted and basement is unfinished, id like to keep my switch and all cables in the basement. However, having the router on the main floor (we have an unfinished attic too) would give the best WiFi coverage. Should I hookup my router on the main floor then run a cable back to the basement to the switch? Or have a non wireless router in the basement with one port going to the main floor WiFi router and another going to the switch?

My second question involves a Nas. I have always wanted to set one up for pics, movies, etc . The biggest use of it will be for streaming movies to my HTS, though if i place it in a different room it will be hard wired to the switch first. If the router and switch are both the same speed (gigabit) then I shouldn't have any speed problems streaming right?

Thank you

Since you are spending the money on wiring the house, expense of an wireless access point is almost nothing compared to that.

You may want to run dual ethernet cables into each room just in case, easy to do while you are doing one and then you don't have to worry if at some point you want a second port.

If you have poor wireless signal from the basement to the main living spaces, I'd disable the wireless on the router (less interference and one less hacking point) and setup a ethernet connected access point on the main floors, maybe two. Which is also where a second jack is handy, you can setup several in places and still have a space for a hardwiring something if needed/wanted. Say a gaming computer or your NAS.

You can hook it up either way you want to. I would prefer to put a router in the basement and a wireless AP on the main floor, but if you want a very simple setup and not have to purchase another piece of hardware (AP or router) then you can certainly put the main router on the main floor and run a wire to it from the modem and another wire from the router back down to the switch. At the speed the signals are traveling over such a short distance you will not notice any additional latency by doing that.

That is correct. Just remember your network is only as fast as its weakest link (to a device). What I mean is if your NAS, switch, and router are 1Gb/s but your wireless is only 250Mb/s then of course anything using wireless will only get 250Mb/s max.
