Upgrading from an AM3+ motherboard to an Intel

I plan on upgrading from a Gigabyte ga-990fxa-ud3 motherboard with an AMD FX8350 to a MSI Gaming Z97 GAMING 5 motherboard with a 4790K CPU.

I was wondering about the process to making the switch go smoothly and failure free. I want to keep completely re-install Windows 10. So, would that mean just hooking the new motherboard and CPU up and running Windows 10 off of a flash drive like usual? Or is there more to it than that. I'd like to keep everything on my hard drives as well.

Are there any alternatives to this?

I did not upgrade from a previous OS. I bought Windows 10 pro when I built my rig.

The 4790k is a great cpu and can still last many years but i would recomend you to wait a couple of months more until zen comes out and see what it can do also the price of the 4790k maybe lower by then. If this helps you test on zen prove zen is faster then broadwell but behind skylake and the 4790k is haswell based thats mean zen cpus will be faster then haswell cpus

Wouldn't I have to get DDR4 ram if I decided to do that then?

Probably depends on the board. Zen will probably debut just like Skylake -- some boards will support the older DDR3 RAM, some boards will support the newer DDR4 RAM.

Speaking as a fan of AMD myself, have you also considered going with a Skylake build instead of the Haswell? Although the 4790K will most likely be up to snuff for the next few years, you're essentially trading one "dead-end" build (Socket AM3+) for another "dead-end" build (Socket LGA 1150). You'll have zero upgrade path for that 4790K CPU -- it's already the best Haswell CPU, & the Broadwells traded core speeds for improved iGPU power.

I don't really mind. A CPU to last me a couple years is all I want. Plus, I wouldn't want to wait for the Zen. I needed to do this upgrade now because my current AMD motherboard/CPU seems to be failing me.
